EUROPE: A Final Week European Round-Up

FRANCE

Lyon (picture of town above) wins the championship on the final day.

Lens who were at one time this season vying for top spot with Lyon have been relegated, first time in 19 years, appointment of outdated manager Roux cost them dear.

Nancy make Champions League, St Etienne make first appearance in European football next season in the Uefa Cup for nearly three decades congrats to them.

French squad, there is no Trezeguet (second top goal scorer in Serie A) and there is no Clichy as Abidal and Evra provide to much competition.

ITALY

Del Piero, who finished top scorer in Serie B last season, followed that up being top scorer in Serie A this season. We must admit this is quite an amazing achievement, fantastic year for Del Piero and looking very likely to be at Euro 2008.

Inter win the league, awful day in Parma until Ibrahimovic who hadn't played since March 29th (seven weeks) came on in the second half and wrapped up the title with two goals.

Inter need a change at management level (before they get arrested for mafia connection, oh dear see phone tap details for amazing reading). Serie A is still finding its feet after recent scandals and Inter will have to step up next season to hold onto their crown.

AC Milan miss out on a European Cup place which goes to Fiorentina, for me this is a good thing, AC Milan will recover that there is no doubt and it pushes Fiorentina into a different league in terms of Champions League competition and the ability to attract much better players in the summer.

This is welcomed by all in Italy and quite an amazing story for the club who had been forced into relegation not to long ago. Will Mutu stay? I hope so.

Parma relegated can you believe it. This stable of talent: Brolin, Asprilla, Zola, Thuram, Veron, Frey, Buffon, Cannavaro, Crespo, Mutu, Adriano and Enrico Chiesa, they will surely be back.

AC Milan, time to find their wallet again will they spend after a while of not much investment. Fans demand purchases seven or eight players have been mentioned time to sort out their house.

SPAIN

Madrid lifts the huge league trophy and the celebrations were surreal and very over the top, bizarre Olympic type closing ceremony on show.

Zaragoza go down, it is unreal and a disgrace with the players they have, team bus followed back to hotel by fans having stones thrown at it.

Barcelona finish third after 5-3 victory and Gio Dos Santos scores a farewell hat trick for outgoing boss Frank Rijkaard.

SCOTLAND

It is going to the final game this Thursday night.

Glasgow Celtic are now in the driving seat and if they beat Dundee United they will win the league, no matter Rangers’ result away to Aberdeen, unless they score a zillion goals eight or nine should do it.

PORTUGAL

Manuel Rui Costa retires at Benfica.

GERMANY

Oliver Kahn retires at champions FC Bayern Munchen.

ENGLAND

European Cup Final, Man Utd—Chelsea this better be a good game, it should be as Chelsea will go for it as they cannot defend and Man Utd will follow.

Who will play right back for Chelsea?

Ferguson goes into this game with more of a headache than Grant in terms of who plays, it will be interesting. Man Utd will have to be careful that Chelsea who has a fierce and powerful set does not overrun the midfield.

Paul Scholes, there is something romantic about him getting to play in the final but Ferguson must be careful when selecting how many holding midfielders he plays.
