John Cena Will Bring Legitimacy Back to U.S. Title with Weekly Defenses

The Doctor Chris MuellerApr 10, 2015

John Cena has vowed to defend the United States Championship every week in order to restore the prestige that the title once had, and he is the perfect man for the job.

You always read about how the midcard titles need to be more important, but everyone has a different opinion on how that can be done. It's kind of like politics, in that way. There's no consensus.

Some think the way to do it is to have someone important hold the title for a long period of time, while others might believe it has to do with the quality of storylines and matches. There are other views, but those seem to be the two most prevalent. Why can't we have both?

Cena is as big as they come when talking about status. He has held more world titles than any active WWE Superstar, and to see him bring such pride to defending the U.S. Championship is going to make a big difference.

With Cena, it's all about visibility. Superstars in the middle of the pack can hold the title and do nothing with it, but when it's around his waist, you know it's going to be looked at as important.

Add in the weekly title defenses and you have a recipe for bringing the belt back to prominence. Even if you don't like Cena, you have to admit that he is putting the title back in the spotlight.

Some critics will tell you that the weekly title defenses don't matter because if anyone can challenge for the belt, it makes the defense meaningless.

What we need to remember is that he has only been doing this for a few weeks. Dean Ambrose and Cody Rhodes are worthy challengers, but what if someone like Hornswoggle decides he wants a shot at the gold?

It's not the challenger who's important in every single match. The champion needs to be portrayed as someone who will take on any and all challenges, and that means opening up the candidacy to any and all willing to step up.

Cena has always carried himself as a fighting champion no matter what championship he was defending, and that is just one of the reasons why putting the belt on the line every week is going to help put eyes on the U.S. title.

Defending the championship every week is going to be good for both the belt and Cena, but it also is going to benefit the entire roster. It will open up the possibility of numerous matches we may not otherwise get to see, and that is always a good thing.

More to the point, Cena being champion can help a number of Superstars lower on the totem pole have a chance to show they can hang with a main event talent.

Stardust was never going to get a match with Cena in most other circumstances, but because he was allowed to answer the open challenge, he was able to show everyone that he can put on the best match of the night against the champ.

This can be how a few struggling Superstars force management to take notice. Even if they are booked to lose, they can have a good showing against Cena and end up impressing all the right people.

Rusev was great as a heel champion because he was believable in everything he said and did, but with him, it was more about shaming the United States than it was about making the title seem important.

Cena will keep showing up every week and putting it on the line, and that is what will ultimately give the U.S. Championship the boost it needs. You may not agree right now, but give it time and you'll see how much he can do for the midcard scene.

What do you think? Is defending the title every week going to help Cena make the U.S. title more important? What other way is there to bring prestige back to a once iconic championship?
