Arsenal Transfer News: Arsene Wenger's Top Targets Named in Latest Rumours

Tom SunderlandMar 21, 2015

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has advised his former club to make a move for Chelsea's out-of-favour goalkeeper Petr Cech, but Lille star Idrissa Gueye may be out of reach for the Gunners this summer.

Speaking to Sports Mole (h/t Charles Perrin of the Daily Express), Parlour highlighted Cech's availability as something Wenger should look to take advantage of following Thibaut Courtois' emergence at Stamford Bridge:

"

He'd be a terrific signing and provide so much experience. He's got some stern competition at Chelsea. He's played in some big, big games and a move across London would be great. Whether Chelsea would let him go, I don't know. He's still a young goalkeeper really and has plenty of years ahead of him. Someone like Petr Cech would be a great signing for Arsenal.

Perrin's report indicates that Chelsea would demand up to £20 million in order to let Cech leave their shores this summer, but it could be a worthy investment for one of the Premier League's most revered stoppers.

Despite dropping behind Courtois in the Blues pecking order, Cech remains a highly regarded asset in his position, with Squawka detailing his fine record of late when he does manage to feature:

Jose Mourinho may not be open to the idea of allowing such a valuable No. 2 leave his ranks, but should the player wish to find a first-team berth elsewhere, his hands may be tied.

Wojciech Szczesny has come under intensified competition from David Ospina this season due in part to a smoking controversy earlier this year, but the Gunners may understandably seek a more elite option between the posts.

The addition of Gabriel Paulista at centre-back has given the north Londoners more sceurity at the back, but a genuinely world-class No. 1 would give Arsenal more credibility in their hunt to return to Premier League title contention.

Irrespective of his fall to the Blues bench, Cech recently left a Manchester United fan disappointed on Twitter when asked if he'd consider a move to Old Trafford:

That may be an indication the Premier League veteran is unwilling to leave for an English rival altogether, but Arsenal may hope it's just the Red Devils Cech has no intention of joining.

Louis van Gaal's side do, however, hold an advantage in the chase of Lille midfielder Gueye, who beIN Sports commentator Matt Spiro quotes as saying he has a dream of featuring for United:

It's disappointing news for the Gunners, with Lewis Rudd of Metro reporting the north London giants as being interested in the midfield anchor.

It's suspected the engine room could be Wenger's priority in terms of improvement this summer as Mikel Arteta edges further into his twilight years and Jack Wilshere contends with persistent injury setbacks.

LILLE, FRANCE - OCTOBER 23: Idrissa Gueye of Lille goes between Phil Jagielka (L) and Muhamed Besic of Everton (R) during the UEFA Europa League Group H match between LOSC Lille and Everton at Grand Stade Lille Metropole on October 23, 2014 in Lille, Fra

Gueye would fit Wenger's target profile as a proven Ligue 1 asset, and Rudd writes that the 25-year-old could be available for as little as £5 million.

Lille are attempting to make a return to European football this season, and Bleacher Report's Andrew Gibney describes Gueye as the club's most important player this term:

Van Gaal will assuredly be alerted to Gueye's preference in making a move to Old Trafford over the Emirates Stadium, but whether or not he chooses to invest is a different question.

Should the Gunners move fastest, there's no assurance Gueye would refuse a north London switch, but Wenger's side are certainly at a disadvantage if Gueye's come-and-get-me plea is anything to go by.
