Eagles Release Mathis

Thursday, June 11

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that the Eagles waived Mathis, immediately making him a free agent.

Mathis has been one of the hottest topics in the NFL this offseason, and speculation swirled around his status with the team.

On June 10, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that Mathis turned down a new deal with the team in 2014 that would have increased his salary by roughly $1 million per season. But when he expressed interest in the deal prior to this season, he was told that the offer had been taken off the table. Mathis was reportedly "miffed" at the withdrawal.

On June 9, head coach Chip Kelly added fuel to the fire surrounding Mathis' status, telling reporters "We will not discuss Evan Mathis contract and I have not talked to him," according to Derrick Gunn of CSN Philadelphia.

Earlier in the offseason, Mathis had been subject to rampant trade speculation, being linked to the Patriots, Dolphins, Rams, Bills, Vikings and Saints at various points.

The 33-year-old guard has spent the past four seasons with the Eagles and has made two consecutive Pro Bowl appearances.

Mathis has come a long way since entering the NFL in 2005 as a third-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers. He has developed into one of the league's most dependable guards, and there will undoubtedly be a market for his services.

Now that the veteran is a free agent, he immediately becomes one of the hottest commodities on the market for teams in need of offensive line help.
