Projections for Sting's Confrontation with Triple H at WWE Fastlane 2015
The sound of crows cawing and of fear raising a man's voice an octave will fill the arena at WWE Fastlane 2015 as Sting confronts Triple H.
One of the pay-per-view's key attractions isn't a match but a face-to-face meeting. With WWE looking to continue its momentum-rich build of this feud, one can count on this being no ordinary dialogue.
WWE's handled Sting's arrival tremendously, the company amplifying his mystique, forcing fans' eyes to watch intently as he walks a slow path to WrestleMania.
As much as WWE has hyped this confrontation and as important as selling folks on this WrestleMania match is, count on this moment being every bit as memorable as any of the scheduled bouts. Look for it to contain visual wizardry and a continuation of the story Sting has been telling since his WCW days.
More Smoke and Mirrors
WWE has set a precedent for leaning on special effects and the supernatural when it comes to presenting Sting. Expect that to continue at Fastlane.
When Triple H called him out on Feb. 9, demanding that he give him an answer about whether he would meet him at the pay-per-view, Sting didn't just tell Triple H, "Yes." The lights went off. Men who appeared to be The Stinger popped up around the arena.
Sting's answer appeared as part of an eerie video that pointed to him having powers that defied the laws of physics.
WWE can't just follow that up with Sting walking into the ring and having an everyday face-to-face meeting. It's clear that the company wants to focus on making him appear powerful and mysterious, employing techniques usually reserved for Undertaker.
That will happen again at Fastlane. Fog, flashes of Sting's face and live crows flitting through the FedExForum are all possibilities.
Officials have to make this so spectacular that fans can't resist resubscribing to the WWE Network. With Sting's run likely to be incredibly short, count on the company holding nothing back.
Every possible firework will be set off between Fastlane and WrestleMania.
The Taciturn Vigilante
To keep the mystery surrounding Sting thriving, WWE won't let him say but a few words.
When he stomped his way into the ring at Survivor Series, he said nothing. Attacking Triple H and aiding Dolph Ziggler in ousting The Authority were loud enough statements.
Sting's debut at Raw featured no bluster, no bragging, no proclamations. He simply pointed to make his intentions clear.
It makes little sense to change direction now. The WWE version of his character is the man waiting in the shadows, waiting for his chance to pounce. He's the silent avenger, a vigilante whose presence does the speaking for him.
That points to this meeting at Fastlane not being the typical anger-filled exchange that so often happens in a wrestling ring. This won't be a promo as much as it will be a showcase of Sting's persona.
Count on there being more spectacle and violence than words.
A Trap Set, a Trap Sprung
Triple H will go into protection mode. In his mind, Sting has finally made his way into the WWE world in order to tear it apart.
In an interview with Michael Cole, he said of Sting's purpose for making his way here now, "This has to do with taking away the WWE."
If the vindictive, merciless leader of The Authority believes he is threatened, one has to believe that he will come prepared. Look for him to be frightened by all of Sting's spooky sleight-of-hand tricks and for his voice to shake. That's when rage floods in and he calls in the dogs.
Kane, Big Show, J&J Security and Seth Rollins are all in his employ. As heels are known to do, he won't allow this to remain a one-on-one situation.
Expect this meeting to be an ambush.
Maybe Triple H gives Sting an opportunity to walk away on his own, but should he refuse, The Game will drop the proverbial hammer. That's WWE's chance to showcase Sting as an ass-kicker.
Just as he did so often when the NWO threatened to overrun WCW, Sting will crack his knuckles against a succession of chins.
This route allows Rollins, Kane and Big Show to get involved despite not being on the card for the night. More importantly, though, it helps set up Sting vs. Triple H at WrestleMania.
Sting attacking the chief operating officer's posse and embarrassing him in the process will anger Triple H to the point where he will demand to battle The Icon. Escalating the level of violence in this feud now is perfect timing.
A number of fans watching Fastlane as part of the free trial during February will be enticed to see how this story plays out, mystified by the spectacle swirling around Sting. Or at least, that's what WWE will be hoping for.
