Muhammad Ali Reportedly Signs Deal with Under Armour
In what may come as a surprising move, Under Armour announced a marketing partnership deal with legendary boxer Muhammad Ali on Wednesday.
Darren Rovell of ESPN reported the agreement:
Rovell has more on the details of the project joining Under Armour and Authentic Brands Group, which owns Ali's estate and licensing rights:
"A limited edition graphic T-shirt goes on sale Wednesday to launch the partnership, with a lifestyle apparel line rolling out next month. In November, Ali's name and image will be on training apparel, footwear and accessories.
"He's an iconic hero from the past and a true innovator," said Glenn Silbert, vice president of men's, outdoors and team sports for Under Armour. "We wondered what Ali would have been like if he had a brand like ours when he was getting started and how great it could have been. That has been the mentality of our design team throughout this process."
"
It appears the companies are hoping the new deal will not only appeal to the nostalgia of older customers but also help introduce a new generation to the storied fighter. The former heavyweight champion and social icon, 73, is one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most important public figures of the 20th century.
You may find people who didn't like Ali for his bravado or fighting style, but you'd be hard-pressed to find many who don't respect him for the impact he had on his sport and on this country.
