Kentucky Basketball: Biggest Things We've Learned About Wildcats in 2014-15

Bobby ReaganFeb 11, 2015

Expectations couldn't have been higher at the beginning of the season for Kentucky basketball. However, the Wildcats have not wavered under the spotlight and have remained the nation's No. 1 teams thanks to a 24-0 record.

So, what have we learned about this team? It's the fact that the 2014-15 Wildcats have the chameleon-type attitude to win games, no matter how it's played. Whether it's playing in the post or getting open looks for guards, this team can play in any way.

The Wildcats have the sixth-best offensive efficiency in the country according to KenPom rankings. On top of that, Kentucky is in the top 66 in the country when it comes to field-goal percentage, points scored per game, rebounds per game and assists per game.

The platoon system employed by Kentucky head coach John Calipari obviously helps with balanced scoring. But it goes further than that when watching Kentucky play a game for 40 minutes. The Wildcats fully embrace playing together as a team and finding the open man.

After falling behind 10-2 early against LSU, freshman guard Devin Booker caught fire, and Calipari ran plays to get him looks. After Booker cooled off, it was fellow freshman Karl-Anthony Towns who started making his presence known in the paint. There was no animosity from anyone else on the court for Kentucky, as there was a noticeable effort to get Towns the ball in the paint.

The other obvious answer in what we've learned about the Wildcats in 2014-15 is that their defense travels. This is easily the best defense in college basketball this season, ranking No. 1 in KenPom's rankings. But on top of that, this defense has the potential to go down as one of the historically best units in the country.

The Wildcats don't do anything particularly confusing when it comes to defensive scheme. Instead, they just use their size and athleticism to overwhelm opponents. With guards like Booker and Tyler Ulis who can pressure ball-handlers, the length at the rim to block shots sits there waiting for anyone who beats their defender.

While Kentucky is typically known as an athletic, offensive team, this is the opposite. Kentucky relies on its defense to start its offense, hoping to run and get quick points off turnovers. While the calendar gets ready to turn to March, these are the two things that will be constant from October until then.
