Tiger Woods Falls out of Top 50 Golf Rankings: Latest Details and Reaction

Mike ChiariJan 31, 2015

Tiger Woods' poor performance at the Waste Management Phoenix Open proved that he isn't currently among the PGA Tour's elite golfers, and now the rankings reflect that sobering fact as well.

According to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com), the 14-time major champion has dropped out of the top 50 in the world golf rankings for the first time in three years.

Woods missed the cut Friday in Scottsdale, Arizona as he carded an 11-over 82 in the second round, which represented the worst 18-hole round of his career, per SportsCenter:

The 39-year-old legend was all alone in last place at the conclusion of his awful day, and he acknowledged that he endured a massive struggle on the course, according to ESPN.com's Bob Harig.

"

We all have days like this. Unfortunately, mine was in a public forum, a public setting. We all have days like this. We take the good with the bad, and the thing is even on bad days like this, just keep fighting, because on the good days you've got to keep fighting, as well.

"

Woods will have to take his own advice to heart and improve rapidly in the very near future, or else he risks having to sit out an extremely important tournament.

Per Ryan Lavner of GolfChannel.com, Tiger will not be eligible for the World Golf Championships sanctioned Cadillac Championship in Doral, Florida if he is unable to return to the top 50:

Woods obviously hasn't been the same player he once was in recent years due largely to injury, but his showing in the Phoenix Open may very well be the professional low point of his career.

It was Tiger's first outing of 2015, so perhaps some of his struggles can be chalked up to rustiness, but he'll need to do a complete 180-degree turn in order to return to a competitive level.
