Colorado Opens Fall Practice: Two Wide Receivers In; Two Linemen Out

Stuart WhitehairAnalyst IAugust 8, 2009

Greetings, Buff fans, from CU at the Game!
Well, it’s finally here! The 2009 season got underway this week as the Buffs reported to camp and conducted their first fall practices.
The primary issue, of course, coming into the weekend: Who’s in and who’s out? Two that are in are wide receivers Andre Simmons and William Jefferson, both completing their academic requirements in time to participate in fall drills (though Simmons was held out this weekend as some of his paperwork from his on-line Community College will not be available until Monday).
Two other players, though, will not be available this fall. Guard Max Tuioti-Mariner, as expected, will be going on a Mormon mission, which will keep him off the field until 2011. Also out for the season is offensive lineman Sione Tau, who was suspended for the fall semester for an undisclosed violation of team rules.
Also suspended—for two games—is wide receiver Markques Simas. The sophomore wide out, a fan-favorite who has yet to catch a pass for the Buffs in competition, has been suspended for the CSU and Toledo games for violating team rules.
News on all of the above, of course, is available at
Also up on the website this weekend—I’ve been working on “Fall Practice - What to Watch For.” It started out as a position-by-position look at what storylines Buff fans will be following this August, but it blossomed into something more. In addition to a breakdown of each unit of the 2009 Buffs, I took a look back at the 2001 Big 12 Champion Buffs.

The 2009 CU personnel, especially on offense, bears a remarkable resemblance to the 2001 Buffs (remember that the 2001 champions were 3-8 also-rans in 2000, so a quick turnaround to a title is not unprecedented!)
Check out the latest news from practice, and please take a few minutes to read “Fall Practice—What to Watch For,” and let me know your thoughts.
Note: I will continue with the weekly email updates throughout fall camp, but I will also be posting reports from camp almost every day, so be sure to check in with CU at the Game during the week for the latest news on your Buffs!
