3 Available Players Still Within Reach of the New York Mets

Shale BriskinDec 19, 2014

The holiday season is here and the Mets are still in the midst of the current offseason. Not too many moves really need to be made at this point generally speaking, but that does not mean that any trade or free-agent possibilities should be ruled out by any means.

There is still a lot of time in the offseason to make some moves if general manger Sandy Alderson chooses to do so. Time will tell whether anything ends up occurring.

Here are three available players still within the Mets' reach.

Asdrubal Cabrera

The one notable shortstop that is still on the free-agent market is Asdrubal Cabrera.

The switch-hitter batted .241 with 14 home runs and 61 RBI this year and will be just 29 next season, which means that he is in the prime of his career.

However, while Cabrera may have youth on his side, his numbers have declined the past two seasons. This could be a red flag.

All-in-all, Cabrera should be able to provide similar run production in comparison to Wilmer Flores, or maybe even a bit more. He also has more veteran experience, which could be a plus for such a young team like the Mets.

On the other hand, if the Mets feel that they are better off paying Flores a cheaper salary than to give Cabrera a significant amount of money, then from a financial perspective this would make sense.

Nonetheless, Cabrera still remains a free-agent option for the Mets to look into.

Tom Gorzelanny

One left-handed reliever the Mets could still pursue is Tom Gorzelanny.

Gorzelanny has spent time with the Pittsburgh PiratesChicago Cubs and Washington Nationals. He then spent the past two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. He clearly has a lot of National League experience and is someone the Mets should keep in mind if they want another southpaw in the bullpen.

Phil Coke

3 of 3

Another free-agent southpaw reliever the Mets could still pursue is Phil Coke.

Coke was 5-2 with a 3.88 ERA last season with the Tigers. He has postseason experience with both the Yankees and the Tigers. Coke would give the Mets a much-needed veteran presence in the bullpen and has a very good track record. For two or three years at a decent price, Coke would certainly be worth signing.

There are not too many really dependable left-handed relievers left on the open market and Coke could likely be the best of the remaining free agents.
