NFL coach calls CFB transfer players 'clowns'
Gerhart was supposed to be the feature back in Jacksonville but was banged up and ultimately didn't produce in 2014, averaging barely over three yards per carry.
After serving as a backup in Minnesota to start his career, it appeared the hard-running Gerhart was destined to truck his way toward a productive stay in Jacksonville's backfield as a feature back. That didn't materialize, as Denard Robinson performed better instead.
Injuries played a role in Gerhart's lackluster 2014 campaign, as he dealt with a foot problem early in the season and suffered a rib contusion in Week 16. The Jags also had a rookie quarterback in Blake Bortles playing behind an offensive line that ranks 29th in both run blocking and pass protection, per Football Outsiders.
If Bortles comes along better in his second year and the line holds up better, perhaps Gerhart still has hope of succeeding as a Jaguar.
But with his power running style, recent injury history and Robinson's 2014 emergence, the deck seems stacked against Gerhart moving forward.
