New Mexico State Ordered to Pay Oklahoma State $10 Per Year for 'Classic Aggie'
The word "pedantic" wouldn't do justice to describe the solution Oklahoma State arrived at to allow New Mexico State to use its "Classic Aggie" mascot that bears resemblance to Stillwater's beloved "Pistol Pete."
Oklahoma State's copyright infringement lawsuit is now a success, mandating that New Mexico State pay $10 annually for using the Pistol Pete-esque figurehead, among a couple of other minor stipulations.
Kyle Fredrickson of The Oklahoman tweeted more details regarding the issue's resolution on Wednesday, per The Associated Press:
While it is admirable for Oklahoma State to protect its heritage—its Cowboys mascot pays homage to renowned gunfighter Frank Eaton—the trivial amount of money seems so inconsequential. This had to be an instance where the principle of the situation was the underlying motivation for a multiple-month legal battle.
In any event, Pistol Pete's legacy and likeness is Oklahoma State's own to stay, but New Mexico State likely won't stray too far from its established culture, which includes the Classic Aggie as an integral component.
