The 15 Things No True Sports Fan Should Ever Say

Nick DimengoNov 14, 2014

Being a sports fan isn't always easy—or always fun—but it's a responsibility that each one of us should take very seriously.

With the ever-changing landscape of teams trading players, guys leaving in free agency and coaches getting canned, it can be difficult to stay true to that team you've always supported.

And even when a team gets absolutely humiliated, it's important for fans to overcome the frustration and stay strong because things aren't always going to be that bad.

So make sure to stay loyal under any circumstance and to never say any of these things—unless you want to get razzed by your buddies.

1. "Game Over!" (When there's still time on the clock)

We've seen a number of times before that nothing is truly over until the game clock strikes triple zeros. And if you don't believe me, well, just wait till your team lets you down by getting beat for thinking otherwise.

It'll be your luck that, the one time you actually say these words, a guy hits an incredible shot to send your team home with a loss.

Any true fan knows to never say this in fear of getting heartbroken later.

2. "That's It, We're Jinxed"

As a Cleveland sports fan, I can absolutely relate to the feeling of being jinxed—after all, I've lived through "The Drive," "The Fumble" and The Decision. Still, no team or city has that much bad luck that their sports teams are bound to fail.

Even when it's the only reason any of us can find as an excuse, still refrain from declaring it.

3. "I Give Up"

No you don't, because no true fan ever gives up on their team.

Sure, when times are tough and all you want to do is turn off the TV or leave a game early, the feeling of giving up might be there, but don't you dare ever say it.

This holds true for either a single game, during a losing streak or over the course of a season when you just want to jump ship and join another team's bandwagon.

You wouldn't turn your back on a friend in need, so don't do the same to your favorite teams.

4. "He's the (Bleepin') Worst"

This is the most common thing to say during a time when a star player just craps the bed—not literally—and fans have little patience for multimillionaires who play a sport for a living to have an off-day.

Unfortunately, they happen.

In fact, sometimes they happen in the most inopportune times, like a matchup against a rival or, worse, a championship game.

Your favorite player may have played poorly, but don't curse him out because of it.

5. "I'm Going to Run Onto the Field"

Under no circumstance—no matter how many beers deep someone is—should a fan say these words.

For those who might have "that buddy" who is the type that would say it, it's your due diligence to tackle him in the stands to prevent it from happening.

We all love streakers at games, just not when our team is either getting blown out or when that person doing it is our friend, so don't even think about these words, let alone going through with it.

6. "Oh, Sorry, I Can't Make the Game Today"

Never, in the history of a sports fan's life, should these eight words be muttered.

Oh, you already have plans for the day? Break them.

Your friend didn't invite you to a game until an hour before it starts? Better hurry up and get to the stadium.

While there are few instances when it's truly OK to miss a game—like a wedding or a funeral—any other reason should require a doctor's note for being absent.

7. "Tickets Are Too Expensive"

Yeah, tickets are probably pretty expensive when your favorite team is playing in a big game. Did you expect otherwise?

I'm not saying anyone should take out a second mortgage to pay for tickets to a sporting event, but fans also should never use high-asking prices as the reason not to attend a game—especially if it's a championship game.

8. "I Just Got This Jersey On Sale"

Of course you did, and do you know why? It's because the guy's jersey that you're wearing no longer plays for that team.

The culprit can go ahead and act like he or she owned the jersey before the player left the team, but, deep down, it will forever haunt their subconscious with regret.

Plus, have you seen prices for jerseys of players who aren't on a team anymore? They're actually pretty damn ridiculous.

9. "Your Team is the (Bleepin') Worst"

As much as yelling to your own team is a bad look, it's even worse when doing so to an opposing fan.

That's because we've seen some gut reactions that end really poorly for everyone involved, like fisticuffs and serious injuries from fan brawls.

While a little banter back and forth is OK, make sure not to come across as too pressing, otherwise, well, you might end up on your back.

10. "I Honestly Think He's Better Than Jordan"

Let's just get this straight right now—no one was better than Michael Jordan.

For that reason, never suggest otherwise, because you'll just sound like you have no idea what you're talking about.

One more thing: Much like comparing teams against one another, let's stop pitting former greats against current ones and just appreciate both, because the debate will never end in either case.

11. "We're Definitely Going to Win a Title"

Confidence is a good thing to have when rooting for a team, but cockiness and ignorance is a completely different beast.

Just ask fans of teams like the Boston Red Sox, who went from winning the World Series in 2013 to finishing in last place the following year, proving that there are no guarantees when it comes to sports.

Us fans might think we're smart enough to predict things, but sports are so unpredictable that it's best to just reserve opinions internally rather than have them blow up in your face.

12. "I Could Do Better Than That"

Nope, you sure can't.

I'm sure it might appear like you can catch or throw a baseball better than some of the attempts athletes have shown, but it's absolutely not true, otherwise a scout would have discovered you rather than the player in the game.

Everyone gets frustrated—and it's OK to show it once in awhile—but to say something as dumb as you doing better than a pro athlete is just silly.

13. "They Should Just Trade the Entire Team"

I know it feels like the entire team is garbage—especially if you're a Philadelphia Sixers fan following that 53-point loss to the Dallas Mavericks—but there has to be some silver lining, right?

Maybe it's just that some of the young players are getting experience, or that, with the crappy performances, they end up with the top pick and superstar in the draft.

Besides that, it's impossible to trade an entire team, so hold back on the negativity and just find something positive in a team that's struggling—that's what a true fan is supposed to do.

14. "Hell Yeah! I Have That Guy on My Fantasy Team" (When "That Guy" is Against Your Team)

Just stop, dude.

I totally understand that you have money with a bunch of friends or coworkers in a fantasy league, but you're about to get put in your place because that guy you're secretly rooting for just scored on your favorite team.

It's one of the most bittersweet feelings a sports fan can have—when a player is against his real-life team—but your allegiance shouldn't lie with the squad that has the word "fantasy" before it.

15. "We Suck"

As I mentioned before, there's no sense in ever throwing in the towel, no matter how bad things get.

True fans stick by a team in both good and in bad, in sickness and in health.

Yep, having a favorite sports team is like a marriage, and while it has its fair share of ups and downs and shortcomings, the last thing a fan should do is just throw their hands up in disgust.
