Keenan Allen's Updated 2014 Fantasy Outlook Heading into Week 3
Keenan Allen fantasy owners are understandably concerned after the San Diego Chargers wideout has failed to make much of an impact on the stat line through the first two games of 2014.
In his opening two performances of the season, the second-year receiver has caught just 10 passes and amassed less than 100 receiving yards with no touchdowns. His 55-yard performance in Week 2 against Seattle was a step up from opening weekend, but not by much.
Performances of 37 yards and 55 yards and no scores to open the season would be deflating for a low-round sleeper pick, much less a player who was drafted at an average of No. 34 overall in drafts, according to FantasyPros.com.

So, is there a big problem with Allen? Is he just facing a sophomore slump? Was it wrong expecting his role as the premier pass-catcher in Philip Rivers' offense to continue?
The answer to all of those questions is a resounding "no."

His low receiving yards through two games isn't much of a reason for concern when you take a look at who has been covering him. In Week 1, Allen struggled while facing a daunting Cardinals secondary and Patrick Peterson. Last week, the Seahawks Legion of Boom secondary and Richard Sherman came to town.
You know, just the league's two best lockdown corners.
And while 55 yards receiving against the Seahawks on Sunday didn't do much for Allen's fantasy owners, it turned the heads of anyone who has been listening to Sherman lament other teams that don't throw in his direction.
Allen's supreme route running had Sherman playing chase all game long, and although he never broke through for any big plays, the performance he posted on Sunday sent a message to the rest of the teams the Chargers face.
And as Bleacher Report's Erik Frenz notes, he should have had a few more grabs:
Rivers has made it no doubt in the early season that Antonio Gates is still his favorite target, but his tight end won't be as dominant of a presence when San Diego faces less capable secondaries and can take advantage of Allen's and Eddie Royal's speed on the outside.
Sure, Allen's fantasy output through two games has been far from superb. But as Yahoo Sports and many others will tell you, there's really no reason out there to give up on him:
The Chargers faced two elite secondaries to start the year, but things get much easier starting in Week 3. San Diego travels to face Buffalo and will go up against a secondary that has let up 275.5 passing yards per game in 2014.
From Week 3 on, the Chargers' matchups in the passing game look to be considerably more favorable than they were in the early goings of 2014. If Allen fails to break out and get back to the numbers he put up as a rookie after games against the Bills, Jaguars and Lions, then maybe it will be time to panic.
But until that happens, there's no reason to make a knee-jerk decision to go with a bench option that might be the third or fourth receiver on his team.
San Diego's passing attack hasn't lost its step entering 2014, and neither has Allen, despite the paltry numbers. A bounce-back should be more than expected for one of the league's most talented wideouts.
