San Francisco Giants Involvement With Roy Halladay Could Work

Zack FarmerJul 14, 2009

Roy Halladay is the American League's best pitcher and the Toronto Blue Jays have every right to ask for everybody's top prospect in return. Furthermore, now that the Jays are falling out of the race they have decided to

So, where do the rancisco San FGiants fit into all of this?

They have a wealth of talent in the farm system and have a legitimate shot at making noise in the playoffs. A move needs to be made but is Halladay the right move?

Let's examine the Giants situation.

On the pitching side, they have Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and, well, that could be a problem.

Randy Johnson is on the disabled list. Although it is not supposed to be serious, he is 45 and could be a problem. Barry Zito is consistently inconsistent.

With Jonathan Sanchez, we'll see. He threw a no-hitter but had an ERA above 5.00 before that start. He had been banished to the bullpen. The Giants hope the no-hitter was a sign of things to come but his next few starts will tell.

If we take into consideration the long term plans which include minor league players, Tim Alderson and Madison Bumgarner,  Sanchez, Zito and Johnson are not part of the plan.

Position players are even less solidified. Pablo Sandoval is the only player on the current roster who is part of the long term solution.

Bengie Molina may not even be around after this season. The fifth pick in last season's draft, Buster Posey, has been called up to AAA after starting the season in Class A. He could be a September call up.

Nate Schierholtz and Aaron Rowand are very nice players but they may become expendable if better outfield options arise.

Edgar Renteria only has a two-year contract. Randy Winn's contract expires after this season.

The Blue Jays, on the other hand, are looking to unload the bad and expensive contracts they have accumulated: Halladay, Vernon Wells and Alex Rios.

The Giants have the flexibility to trade some pieces. A deal that could work is the Giants sending Jonathan Sanchez, Randy Winn, Angel Villalona and one or two more minor league players to the Jays for Halladay and Alex Rios.

Financially, this would unload nearly 30 million off Toronto's 2010 payroll and give them young talent for the future of the franchise. For the Giants, it adds 12 million to a payroll which will lose about 30 million within the next year.

If the Giants were to make this deal, they would be in possession of the best rotation in baseball. Think of it. Lincecum, Halladay, Johnson and Cain. Having Sandoval, Rios and Molina in the middle of the order would not be bad either.

The Giants may not get involved but if they do, this is what they should do.
