Stock Up, Stock Down for the Phillies' Top 10 Prospects for Week 9

Zak SchmollJun 2, 2014

It has been a tough week down on the farm for the Philadelphia Phillies. The previous week was great, but almost every top player took a step back this week. Obviously it is a long season, and there are peaks and valleys all along the way. However, it is kind of interesting that these seem to happen in waves.

Regardless, here is how Week 9 went down for the top 10 prospects in the Philadelphia Phillies' farm system.

10. Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, RHP

1 of 10

Last Week's Stats: N/A

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez was beginning to make his way to the majors, but according to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Gonzalez complained of a "dead arm" after his last start on May 25. He is still on the disabled list, and who knows how much more time it will take to get his arm back to a competition level.

2014 Stats: 0-2, 6.75 ERA, 9.1 IP, 9 BB, 3 K

9. Roman Quinn, SS

2 of 10

Last Week's Stats: .158, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 SB

Roman Quinn got off to a fast start coming back from injury, but this past week has not been quite so successful. He only had three hits on the week, and while he did try to steal two bases, he got caught both times. Right now, we are dealing with a small sample size, so this one bad week has influenced his numbers substantially. I wouldn't be too concerned yet.

2014 Stats: .225, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 3 SB

8. Tommy Joseph, C

3 of 10

Last Week's Stats: N/A

Tommy Joseph is not back yet, but the Reading Eagle is reporting that he is probably about two weeks away from returning. Hopefully, he'll be able to pick up right where he left off. He has a great deal of offensive potential, and with Carlos Ruiz getting older behind the plate, there will be a major league position open in the relatively near future. Hopefully, he will be able to avoid any more injuries.

7. Cesar Hernandez, 2B

4 of 10

Last Week's Stats: .167, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 SB

Cesar Hernandez is getting more playing time, but his bat has hardly heated up at all. It is worth pointing out that he has been better, but three hits in 18 at-bats is still not great. Still, he was incredibly hot in the minors, so maybe he will be able to find some of that while Cody Asche is on the DL. He doesn't have a ton of power, but he has a knack for getting on base.

2014 Stats: .156, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 0 SB

6. Severino Gonzalez, RHP

5 of 10

Last Week's Stats: 0-2, 6.00 ERA, 12.0 IP, 0 BB, 7 K

Severino Gonzalez had a pair of starts last week. In the first one, he went seven innings while only giving up three earned runs. That's not bad. In the second, he gave up five earned runs in five innings. That's not so hot. It has been that kind of year for Gonzalez. He has risen up and down, but let's hope he can break his three-game losing streak and get back to normal.

2014 Stats: 4-6, 5.19 ERA, 69.1 IP, 15 BB, 46 K

5. Carlos Tocci, CF

6 of 10

Last Week's Stats: .200, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SB

Carlos Tocci is still struggling on this season. His performance from two weeks ago was encouraging, but this past week has been difficult. He has seven extra-base hits total this season, so he is not far off from his pace last season. However, the gains have been minimal in 2014. He is still young, so there is time for development, but last week was not great.

2014 Stats: .230, 0 HR, 15 RBI, 2 SB

4. Ken Giles, RHP

7 of 10

Last Week's Stats: 0-0, 4.91 ERA, 2 SV, 2 BB, 2 K

Ken Giles allowed his first runs since May 9 this week, so I guess that makes this week a step down from previous weeks. However, keep in mind that he had been virtually unhittable this season, and he has struck out a remarkable amount of opponents. I guess we can excuse him for having one bad day in the entire month of May. I am very intrigued with his development this season.

2014 Stats: 2-0, 1.69 ERA, 11 SV, 12 BB, 36 K

3. J.P. Crawford, SS

8 of 10

Last Week's Stats: .208, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 1 SB

J.P. Crawford is still having an amazing year, but he had a little bit tougher time this week. In three out of his seven games, he failed to get a hit. In the game where he did get a hit, he only had one. This is obviously nothing to worry too much about, and he is still having a fabulous year. However, this was a step down from what he has been showing for the rest of the year.

2014 Stats: .322, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 9 SB

2. Jesse Biddle, LHP

9 of 10

Last Week's Stats: 0-1, 2.84 ERA, 6.1 IP, 2 BB, 3 K

Jesse Biddle had another strong outing in Reading. Most of his starts are quality starts, and while it is not necessarily concerning, his strikeouts have dropped off somewhat as of late. All of that being said, he still is averaging over a strikeout per inning, but over his last 12 innings, he only has six. If he gets the outs, then it's hard to complain, but it is worth keeping an eye on.

2014 Stats: 3-5, 3.14 ERA, 63.0 IP, 26 BB, 64 K

1. Maikel Franco, 3B

10 of 10

Last Week's Stats: .194, 0 HR, 1 RBI, 0 SB

Maikel Franco is still trying to rebound from a very difficult April. He still hasn't quite found the power that set him apart last season, but his average continues to creep north, which is obviously positive. It does not seem as if he will be called up right now, even though that had been speculated about last week. For now, he will remain in Lehigh Valley and get the power back to his game.

2014 Stats: .229, 4 HR, 20 RBI, 1 SB
