PGA Tour: Stewart Cink Is Long Overdue

Michael FitzpatrickApr 28, 2008

Winning a golf tournament is no easy task.

Tiger Woods has made many believe that winning a tournament is just a walk in the park for the world’s top players.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Woods is probably the most dominate player the sport has ever seen and he manages to make something very difficult, winning a golf tournament, look very easy.

For the rest of the top players in the world, if they are consistently finishing in the top 25 and manage to win more than one tournament in a season, they are having a great year.

Having said that, there is one player on the PGA Tour who is long overdue for a win.

Stewart Cink is probably having the best year of anyone on tour other than Tiger Woods.

Cink is third in FedEx Cup points, fourth on the PGA Tour Money List and is ranked 14th in the World Golf Rankings.

In nine events this season, Cink has finished in the top 10 five times, the most of anyone on tour.

Cink is playing better and more consistent than probably at any other point in his career.

He is hitting 70.69 percent of greens in regulation, third on tour, and has a scoring average of 69.74, ranked sixth on tour.

Cink has two second place finishes this year. He finished second to Woods at the World Golf Championship–Accenture Match Play Championship. He also finished second at the PODS Championship, after squandering on the back nine of the final round, which has been Cink’s trademark over the years.

Cink has the reputation of a guy that cannot close out golf tournaments.

Cink is that player that you consistently see on leader boards, always ranks as one of the top players in the world and makes about $3-4 million in tour earnings per year, but never seems to be the guy holder the trophy on Sunday.

Cink’s last victories came back in 2004 when he won the MCI Heritage and the WGC-NEC Invitational.

Over the coming weeks, look for Stewart Cink to finally be the guy holding the trophy on Sunday.

Cink is playing too well and his game is too consistent for him to not walk away with a victory some time over the next few weeks. Especially with Woods out of the picture most likely until the U.S. Open in mid-June.

Cink appears more confident this season and is playing downright great golf, which would indicate that it is only a matter of time before he picks up his next tour victory.

Look for Cink to make a run at this week’s Wachovia Championship and next week’s Players Championship.
