Three San Francisco Giants Make List of Top Six Fantasy Sleepers

Greg CaggianoApr 26, 2008

Top offensive sluggers in a slump? Pitching aces struggling to rack up K's? Don't worry! Check out these top fantasy baseball sleepers to fill those gaps in your lineup!

Batters

1. Ryan Doumit (Pittsburgh Pirates; C, OF): I had him on my fantasy team late last season. Although my team finished in dead last, I have no regrets about picking this guy up. On a weak Pittsburgh offense, he provides decent power and can hit for both the fences and for average.

His duality as both a catcher and outfielder makes his worth even more. At the start of the season, Yahoo! ranked him at around 304. His ranking has now plummeted to around 85. He is 23-of-64 so far this season, with four HRs and eight RBI while batting .359.

2. Jayson Werth (Philadelphia Phillies; OF) On a offensively stacked Phillies team, who would have thought a guy like Jayson Werth would fit in? Well, obviously he has and by leading the Phillies in most offensive categories.

At the start of the season, Yahoo! ranked Werth at around 559, but this season he is ranked at around 58. He's 20-for-64 right now on the young season with five HRs and 11 RBI while batting .313. The guy can also steal bases when he needs to and has two on the season.

3. Fred Lewis (San Francisco Giants; OF) The future of the Giants' outfield lies with this young man. After struggling to find a place in the lineup both this season and last, he has finally found his spot as the leadoff man.

Last season, Lewis showed his talents by hitting two grand slams along with a cycle. He's picking up right where he left off. Yahoo! had Lewis ranked at around 977 at the beginning of the season and right now he ranks at about 220.

So far, he's 24-for-77 with one HR and six RBI while batting .313. He only has two stolen bases this season but I guarantee the more he plays, the more he will build the confidence to steal bases.

Pitchers

Jonathon Sanchez (San Francisco Giants; SP) During the off season, his name was constantly being whispered around in trade rumors, but the Giants are glad that they kept him. Sanchez has shown absolutely electric stuff, compiling more strikeouts then innings pitched.

The only reason he remains available in most leagues is because of the Giants' offense and bullpen. With no lead ever a done deal, Sanchez will give you innings, strikeouts, and good ERA, but he may not rack up the win totals just yet.

Yahoo! had him ranked at around 659 at the beginning of the season but he now ranks at around 91. In 28 innings pitched, Sanchez has a 2-1 record along with 36 strikeouts and a 3.54 ERA.

Dana Eveland (Oakland Athletics; SP) There are fantasy baseball pitching sleepers all around the American League, but this guy stands out. On a rotation that lost Dan Haren, the A's needed a youngster to step up, and they got it with rookie hurler Dana Eveland.

In 29 innings this season, he is 3-1 with 21 strikeouts and a 2.48 ERA. Yahoo! had him ranked at 361 to start the season, but after this excellent start, he dropped to 106

Brian Wilson (San Francisco Giants; RP) This is not the Beach Boy we're talking about here, but a very good young closer on the Giants. He got some experience late last season as closer and did very well. Now, the job rests completely on his shoulder for the entire season, and he has impressed me thus far.

He doesn't do things easily as he walk totals are a little high, but he seems to pitch well with men on base as he has converted 8-out-9 save opportunities this season. His record right now stands at 0-0 with 8 saves and a 3.48 ERA. Yahoo! recognized his ability by ranking him at a low 202, but he has dropped even further to 165.
