Tim Duncan is the best Center in the game, even with Yao Ming healthy. Yes, better than Dwight Howard, Shaq "The Diesel has run out" O'Neal, and Pau Gasol. With his determination and experience, it would be no surprise to me to see the Spurs make the Finals again this year, despite the plethora of talent in the West.
I am utterly infatuated with the way he plays, because he plays REAL basketball, not this NBA street-style garbage. I don't want to throw too many stats out, because Duncan's game already speaks for itself, but after an incredible performance in Game One in which Duncan dominated Shaq with 40 points and 15 rebounds, his encore performance of 18 points and 17 rebounds propelled the Spurs to a victory.
Now sure, Howard is averaging 27/21, but his team barely squeaked by a mediocre Raptors team. Duncan and the Spurs have played two quality games against one of the best teams in the NBA, the Suns. Side note: if anyone wants to say the Suns are as mediocre as the Raptors, they are, in the words of Seth Greenberg, "certifiably insane".
Duncan's longevity and career numbers put him 2nd on my list of overall active players if the league were to end now, trailing only the hated Kobe Bryant. By the way, yes, I'm a Kobe hater too, but that's for a different column.
Timothy Duncan has refused to adapt to this awful National Thug Basketball Assocation mantra, but rather remains playing his "face-you-up, twenty-foot bank, good!" game.
This man cannot be stopped in the postseason. He works too hard for these moments and will shine once again this year. For that, the Spurs are my pick to win the West, and if you don't already know me, that means winning the championship; the East is too much of a joke for me to even talk about.
The Spurs will win the title in 2008, creating a better dynasty than the Patriots.

I don't like watching Tim Duncan or the Spurs play because they bore me to tears. They play a style of basketball that is a throw back to a generation long lost, thankfully.
Having said that Tim Duncan and Shaquille belong together as the greatest centers of their generation. Today Tim is the best post player in the NBA bar none no questions asked.
Everytime I watch Tim play I realize how good he is as I doze off to sleep.

Fair enough, but people must notice as "boring" as the Spurs and Tim may be, he is still dominant.

Benjamin-
Great article. My sentiments exactly on Duncan, the Spurs, and the other players in the NBA.
There may be some bias b/c I am Spurs fan, but I don't understand why people would call the Spurs boring. I love watching Parker drive the lane, Ginobili dribble in and out of impossible situations, and Duncan measure up his shots.
Plus, what's more amusing than waiting for one of Gregg Popovich's veins to pop out of his head?!

The Spurs boring? If you consider consistent winning basketball and no off-court drama boring, then I'll buy that. By in large, though, this is a myth that won't go away. Did anyone notice that they've gotten MORE fastbreak points than the Suns in the first two games? And when they do lose, they never make excuses like some other "unnamed" franchises.
The Spurs are magic on court--great offensive execution, tenacious team defense, fearless penetrators to the basket, and clutch performances time after time. This what REAL basketball is supposed to be! And they have the championships to prove it.
Dunks, crossovers, and no-look passes are exciting to watch, but they ONLY mean something when they produce WINNING basketball. Give me the "boring" mental toughness and championship pedigree of the San Antonio Spurs over the rest of these over-hyped NBA posers any day!

I know this article was published about two weeks ago, but Duncan and the rest of his team seem old, boring and slow so far this second round. We'll see how the two contests in San Antonio go.
