New York Mets Will Need Some Help If October Is to Be in Their Future

So what! The Mets are in first place.

They don't stand a chance in the latter months of the season if they don't make some improvements before the deadline.

My number one complaint: Carlos Delgado. The once mighty slugger is struggling mightily. Last I noticed he was hitting .197. You can't be doing that at the pro level anymore.

He could get away with it if he had like five or six dingers, but he doesn't.  I know he's a great player, and a great clubhouse presence, but the Mets need to make a change if he doesn't start hitting in May.             

Now to the bullpen.

Aaron Heilman is not automatic and Scott Schoeneweis has been terrible.

What do they have in the pen, Billy Wagner?

Wag's stuff has fallen off the horse over the last three or four seasons. He doesn't throw 100 MPH anymore. Luckily his slider is devastating. He will re-invent himself as he ages.

Sanchez is back, and if he is healthy, he will be huge for these guys. If the Mets would have had him and Orlando Hernandez they would have won the World Series in 2006.

Even if Delgado can't do the trick, he does have that malevolent presence in the lineup. But, how long will that last before teams start to “fear no more” or the big cat? 

Wright, Reyes, and Beltran are plenty to carry the team into the postseason.

Let’s just hope that the Mets can find a way to make do with what they have now. There will be players out there, at the trading deadline, especially if Detroit is still struggling.
