The first pictures of the new Bernabeu Stadium have been released by Real Madrid.

Announcing the plans, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez told a press conference: "We want the new stadium to be an icon, a global symbol."

According to the BBC, £330 million will be spent on a significant overhaul of the iconic, 85,454-seater stadium, with plenty of work being done to the exterior:

A new exterior to the stadium will be built, featuring a hotel and shopping centre, with work to begin at the end of the season and be completed by 2017. Half the financing would come from selling naming rights and half from a bond issue among Real members.

Real Madrid have been at the Bernabeu since 1947, but it has been substantially remodelled in the past.

This revamp is done to bring the stadium into the 21st century, and there's certainly an air of excitement around the images on Twitter already.
