Chelsea Transfer News: Jose Mourinho Smart to Rule Out January Panic Buys

Joseph ZuckerJun 8, 2018

Chelsea shouldn't feel blue if they fail to sign a marquee player this January.

With the club's troubles scoring and occasional defensive lapses, plenty of supporters are calling for Jose Mourinho to bring in reinforcements.

However, the Special One has no such plans, per the club's Twitter account:

Simply put, it's the right strategy for Chelsea.

The panic at Stamford Bridge is a bit overstated. There's no doubting that the Blues have problems, but so does every other title contender.

Arsenal were manhandled by Manchester City on Saturday. City are terrible away from home. Liverpool are without Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard, not to mention how long it's been since the Reds were in the top four at the end of the season. Tottenham are a mess, as are Manchester United. And Everton have even less experience than their Merseyside counterparts when it comes to being in the top four.

Even with everything that has gone wrong for Chelsea, they're second in the table heading into Sunday's action, and Mourinho is the manager. In the event they don't win the title, they should still comfortably qualify for the Champions League.

A strike force of Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba isn't optimal, but it's good enough for the time being. Things aren't going to get much worse than they are now.

Plus, Romelu Lukaku will be returning to the club at the end of the season. There's no need to compound one mistake (loaning Lukaku to Everton) with another mistake (signing somebody who would take playing time away from him). The 20-year-old should be the centerpiece of the attack for the future. Chelsea don't need to sign a world-class forward when they've already got a potential one on the books.

As great as signing Radamel Falcao or Edinson Cavani would be in the short term, it doesn't make a ton of sense in the long term.

Another thing you have to consider is the inefficiency of the January transfer market in general. You almost always overpay for a player, and by the time he's fully bedded into the squad, the league campaign is almost two-thirds of the way gone.

Chelsea of all clubs should know full well the pitfalls of making a panic signing in January. They're still getting grief for the £50 million transfer of Fernando Torres in 2011, and for good reason. That and the Andy Carroll transfer to Liverpool illustrate everything that can go wrong during the January window.

What's the point in buying a marquee player in January, when the Blues can wait a few months and do it during the summer, when it will be much easier and the player will have more time to adjust to Mourinho's tactics and build some continuity with his teammates?

Although some supporters may be upset to see the club stand pat this January, it's ultimately the smarter decision and will pay big dividends come the summer.
