The least Arsenal players could do was applaud travelling fans after the game, but—according to the Mirror's John Cross—Mesut Ozil failed to do so:
Wow. Rarely see that. Mertesacker bawling out Ozil for not applauding away fans. No wonder Mertesacker such a hero among Arsenal fans.— John Cross (@johncrossmirror) December 14, 2013
Here's a picture which appears to show Ozil's fellow German international Per Mertesacker reading him the riot act:
BFG angry at Ozil for not going and clapping the Arsenal away support. Love the passion from Per! pic.twitter.com/8HSOwWeOZL— Gordon (@Arsenal_Supremo) December 14, 2013
Little wonder these are those who think Mertesacker deserves to be wearing the captain's armband.
Later on Saturday, Ozil offered this apology via his official Facebook page.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was wasn't worried about a possible breakdown between Ozil and Mertesacker. "That is the Germans, they will sort that out between themselves," he said, as per NBC Sports.
