Sonics Move: Will Seattle’s “Ball” Bounce into NASCAR’s Court?
I've given up most sports, actually make that all sports, with the obvious exception of racing. But I noted with interest Peter Fās Saturday post at Wizbang Sports outlining the Seattle Sonics' move to Okie City.
(WHERE? Oklahoma City, close to where the deer and buffalo roam, I think, and square on top of okla21fan.)
(WARNING: SPECULATION ALERT!) Iām wondering what this does for NASCARās dream of a track in the Northwest, specifically the track thatās all been given up for dead in the Seattle area.
After lawsuits early in the process, windows with pigs flying past and a Washington State Governorās āwarmingā to the idea of an ISC-owned boondoggle track in her backyard early last year, the idea seemed to die on the vine.
Aside from all the normal opposition to the track were two opposing sides on the issue of funding. One side was staunchly in favor of state tax money spent on a new arena for the Sonics.
The opposition, those in favor of the track, wanted tax money and the issuance of state backed bonds to help fund ISCās Folly, as it came to be known by the basketball fans.
So now the question has to be asked, what now? What now that there is no need for funding a new arena for a team that flew the coop for The Sooner State?
Are NASCAR officials in Daytona and Charlotte licking their chops in anticipation of a racetrack resurrection in the Seattle area with this news?
Inquiring minds, and bloggers whose minds are clouded with little digital bits, want to know.
They also want to know, will they now be the Sooner Sonics? Or the Great Plains Sonics? Or possibly the Choctaw Sooners? Nah, no way not in this PC world, not when they complain about the Seminoles.
Regardless, itās all food for thought on a Sprint Cup-less weekend.
