Jim Furyk Shoots 6th-Ever 59 in 2nd Round of BMW Championship

Jim Furyk has been playing some of the best golf of his career lately, but on Friday during the second round of the BMW Championship, he played some of the best golf of anyone's career. 

Entering the day at one-over and in a tie for 39th place, the 43-year-old became just the sixth golfer ever to break 60, finishing with an unreal 12-under 59 at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forrest, Ill.

Not only did he shoot a 59, but he did it despite bogeying hole No. 5. According to ESPN Stats & Info, that's an accomplishment that has never been done before in the long history of the sport:

Furyk started the day on the back nine, where he did something that only the most talented players in the world are capable of pulling off—if they're playing a video game. He went birdie, birdie, birdie, par, birdie, eagle, par, birdie, birdie on his way to an eight-under 28 before making the turn back to hole No. 1. 

His pace didn't slow down there, though, as he knocked down three birdies on the next four holes to get to 11-under with five to play. 

As whispers of a sub-60 began, however, he slipped up and bogeyed No. 5. 

After a par on No. 6, Furyk calmly drilled this 11-foot putt on No. 7 to bring him back to 11-under with two holes remaining.

He parred the par-five No. 8, meaning he had to birdie the final hole for history. Naturally, he stuck this approach shot within a few feet like it was just another ordinary day of golf:

Furyk, who has four top-10 finishes in his last five tournaments, including a runner-up at the PGA Championship, is currently tied for first with Brandt Snedeker at 11-under and looks like a lock to advance to the Tour Championship in Atlanta next week. 

If he plays even a fraction as well as he did on Friday, the rest of the Tour could be in serious trouble.
