Michael Beasley Arrested on Suspicion of Marijuana Possession
Phoenix Suns forward Michael Beasley was arrested in Scottsdale, Ariz., on suspicion of marijuana possession, reports 12 News in Phoenix:
Station producer Lauren Peikoff states the arrest took place Tuesday morning:
The incident comes four years after Beasley checked into a rehabilitation facility. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported at the time that the Miami Heat, with whom the forward was playing, encouraged him to address potential issues:
"Sources said the Heat encouraged Beasley to check into the facility to address possible substance and psychological issues. He is expected to spend time with former NBA player and coach John Lucas, who is renowned for his success in working with troubled players. As part of the NBA’s treatment program, Beasley is expected to stay in the facility for a minimum of 30 days with little outside contact, one source close to him said.
"
Two years ago, Beasley was ticketed for speeding and possession of marijuana in Minnesota during the offseason.
Last summer, the Kansas State product signed with the Suns as he looked to get his once promising career back on track. The reported incident is obviously a setback in those efforts.
In reporting a "high-profile arrest," the Scottsdale Police Department released the following information about the incident:
"On 08/06/13 at 1:15 am SPD made a stop for a traffic violation in the area of Scottsdale and McCormick Roads. As the officer approached the vehicle he could smell marijuana emanating from within the car. A search of the driver’s area recovered marijuana that was impounded. The driver, identified as Michael Beasley, was booked pending charges for possession of marijuana and released.
"
The Suns did not release any immediate comments in response to the situation.
Ben Golliver of Sports Illustrated states it's the third time Beasley has been linked to trouble this year. He was previously under investigation for sexual assault in May and was cited for traffic violations in February, which brought no discipline from the team.
Beasley is a talented player who was selected with the second overall pick in 2008. He's never been able to reach his sky-high potential due to continued off-court problems, however. The Suns represent his third team in five NBA seasons.
Every time Beasley makes headlines for something other than his production on the basketball court, it's another step in the wrong direction. The Suns, who finished last season with a 25-57 record, can't be happy about his latest incident.
