If the NBA Playoffs Started Today…

Chase SagumApr 11, 2008

If the NBA playoffs started today, who would be playing each other?

Who would win those match ups? What upsets are likely to happen?

Since the eastern conference is boring, let’s not even talk about them. Let’s get right down to the nitty gritty and talk about the competitive western conference. This, of course, could change, but if the playoffs started today, here would be your western conference match ups:

  • Hornets vs. Nuggets
  • Spurs vs. Mavs
  • Lakers vs. Suns
  • Jazz vs. Rockets

Which spots are likely to change?
With only a couple games left to go in the season, it looks as if the Hornets should be able to wrap up the number one seed.

I think that the Lakers will win their upcoming match up against the Spurs and reclaim the second seed, putting the Spurs in the third spot.

Never underestimate the Golden State Warriors and their ability to sneak into the eighth spot and kick out the Nuggets. But after last night’s game, it appears that the Nuggets should get in at the eighth spot.

Call me crazy, but I still find it hard to believe that the Suns will be stuck with the sixth spot. It will be interesting to see if they can move up a notch into the fifth spot to play the Utah Jazz in the first round. If all my predictions are true, here is what your match ups would look like:

  • Hornets vs. Warriors
  • Lakers vs. Mavs
  • Spurs vs. Rockets
  • Jazz vs. Suns

If this is how the match ups end up, expect both the Lakers and the Spurs to win their first round series and the Suns and Jazz to go seven games, with either team possibly winning.

And I may be going out on a limb here, but I predict the Nuggets beating the Hornets on their first round seven game series. In which case, here would be your second round series:

  • Nuggets vs. Jazz/Suns
  • Lakers vs. Spurs

I know I like to make bold predictions, but predicting any further than this in what is perhaps the most competitive conference of all time would be far too bold, even for me.

That’s my take on the upcoming playoffs so far, lets see if you can predict better.

Oh by the way, you better believe I have the Lakers going to the NBA finals!
