Liverpool Transfer News: Latest Quotes and Gossip on Luis Suarez

Nick AkermanJun 1, 2018

The Luis Suarez saga continues to progress at a rapid pace.

Much like the striker himself, reports across the British press remain unpredictable, ensuring the Uruguayan's future is far away from being resolved as we enter the final month of the summer transfer window.

Both Liverpool and Arsenal fans will be feeling frustrated, confused and quite possibly bored with the ongoing speculation.

One unifying set of quotes came from Arsene Wenger, as he confirmed to David Ornstein of BBC Sport that Arsenal will only hunt Suarez in a professional manner, hinting that a transfer request from the player could make a huge difference:

"

We want to [sign Suarez] if it is feasible in an amicable way. We will respect what Liverpool want to do. I don't want to speak about Suarez, because that is between Liverpool and Arsenal.

I am a great believer you have to keep as much confidentiality as possible, which is quite difficult in the modern world.

"

Former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow added to the debate that Suarez's move to Arsenal would make little sense, even though the player's ambition is to once again appear in the Champions League. Purslow chatted with BBC 5 Live, as reported by BBC Sport:

"

If the only offer is from Arsenal I would expect Luis Suarez to stay at Liverpool. ... It's disappointing as a follower of Liverpool that the player has so publicly and so early in the close season made it pretty clear that he would like to move on. I'm pretty realistic about these things and it's not that unusual for a player of that magnitude to want to play at Champions League level. That appears to be his motivation.

"

Another former board member twisted the knife to suggest Suarez's potential move to Arsenal does make sense. Damien Comolli—who was behind the signing of Suarez in 2011—made it quite clear the Reds will struggle to maintain their prized asset if Champions League football continues to elude them:

"

When I was there, we knew it would be hard to keep players like (Pepe) Reina, (Daniel) Agger, Luis if we couldn't get into the Champions League. Luis is extremely ambitious and with all due respect to Liverpool, they're a top eight side, not top four like Arsenal.

"

Brendan Rodgers has remained resolute during the transfer window and will fight to receive top dollar for Suarez if he is to be sold. In the aftermath of Real Madrid's overpriced pursuit of Gareth Bale, Rodgers believes Suarez should be assessed at the same value, as reported by Mike Carey of the Express:

"

It is very, very simple. He is a top player and we don't want to sell him.

Of course, throughout the world every player will have a value but you only have to look at the market - and £40m and £1. Gareth Bale, they are talking about nine figures.

Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez were arguably the two best players in the Premier League and you can't say Bale is valued at more than 100 per cent more than Suarez.

Every single player will be open to that (right bid), but it is not even something we are thinking about.

"

Pepe Reina has enjoyed speaking his mind since joining Napoli and decided to weigh in on the debate from Italy. As reported by Sky Sports, the on-loan goalkeeper expects Suarez to leave Anfield if the price is right, saying, "It looks like he's going to leave, but at the end of the day, the club says he's their players and they must take the decision."

Steven Gerrard has remained a Liverpool darling throughout his career and turned down Bayern Munich, according to Chris Bascombe of the Telegraph. Gerrard suggests he believes Suarez should stay in Merseyside for at least another season:

"

I have been through that enough before. That is the message for Luis. I am hoping from a biased point of view that he gives us another year and shows us the form he did last season. Maybe it will be time for him to go next year or the year after. I don’t think it is the right time for him to go just yet.

"

As ever, the reports continue to roll in thick and fast. Suarez is a stunning player who can add real flair to any side in the world. Liverpool fans know it; Arsenal fans know it. One thing's for sure: Everyone can take solace from Piers Morgan's distress at the entire situation:

Will Suarez remain at Anfield? Will he switch Liverpool for London? Let me know in the comments section below.
