Scottish Open 2013 Prize Money: Complete Purse and Earnings

Ethan GrantJun 8, 2018

Phil Mickelson won the 2013 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open on Sunday, beating Brendan Grace in a one-hole playoff after 72 holes were insufficient in crowning this year's winner.

On a windy and challenging day at Castle Stuart Golf Links, the lefty had a one-stroke lead over Grace heading into the 18th hole during the final round. But Mickelson would bogey the par-five finale when he needed a par to take home the trophy outright, sending Grace back to the course for a playoff.

Starting back to the tee box at No. 18, Mickelson proved that you don't let good golfers get a chance to play the same hole back to back.

His disappointing second shot landed in the sand just short of the hole, but Mickelson, who is famous for his ability to scramble a good shot out of a poor lie, hit his third shot within inches of the hole to guarantee himself a birdie. The shot also succeeded in putting all the pressure on Grace to sink a long birdie putt.

The putt didn't find the hole, and Mickelson now finds himself in a great position of momentum just days before the 2013 Open Championship is set to begin in Scotland.

Callaway Golf had the congratulatory tweet as Mickelson's strong four-day performance at Castle Stuart came to a close on Sunday:

Mickelson vanquished some previous demons from his trip to the Scottish Open in 2007; the lefty also played in a playoff during the event that year but would finish second to Gregory Havret.

As noted by ESPN's Justin Ray, it was Mickelson's first win in Europe in 20 years:

Behind the two playoff participants, who would finish with a score of 17-under, JB Hansen and Henrik Stenson tied for third at 15-under. Martin Laird, Gareth Maybin and John Parry were all one stroke behind that duo to finish tied for fifth, and Raphael Jacquelin and Nicolas Colsaerts both checked at 13-under to finish tied for eighth.

Marcel Siem and Peter Uihlein finished at 11-under to round out the top 10.

The total purse was £3 million this year at the Scottish Open, one of the final tuneups before the 2013 British Open. Mickelson's performance will certainly boost claims that he's ready to contend in Scotland this week.

Lefty was loose, yet motivated, during his European Tour win, and it showed all week at the tournament.

After finishing second at the U.S. Open for an unprecedented sixth time earlier this year, Mickelson is playing his impressive brand of risky golf at the right time in preparation for the third major championship of the 2013 season.

Now that the results from Inverness are final, here's a look at what the top golfers took home for their efforts at the 2013 Scottish Open.
