Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Updates on Julio Cesar, Luis Suarez and More
This has already been a pretty active summer for Arsenal, and it promises to be even more so over the next couple of months.
The Gunners have already sent some of the deadwood packing, while bringing in a promising young player in Yaya Sanogo.
Although Arsene Wenger is generally timid in the transfer market, he and Arsenal seem to be in a rather bullish mood. Finally, they are ready to spend the millions of pounds that have been left over for the transfer budget.
Here are some of the more recent updates regarding Arsenal's transfer dealings.
Julio Cesar to Napoli
One of the better moves Arsenal could have made this summer was buying Julio Cesar. He would have been a cheap option at goalkeeper and a great mentor to Wojciech Szczesny, and the kind of threat that would help push the young keeper to his full potential.
Instead, it looks as if Cesar will be heading to Napoli instead, per Italian football journalist Tancredi Palmeri.
Although Cesar will be 34 next season, he's still got a lot left in the tank. There were major question marks when he moved to Queens Park Rangers, but Cesar did his best to return to his prime at Inter Milan.
This should be considered a major missed opportunity for the Gunners.
Szczesny's development has stalled a little bit. He can definitely be the goalkeeper of the future, but he makes too many silly mistakes at the moment. Szczesny needs that little jolt in order to wake up and realize his position on the team isn't set in stone.
Plus, Cesar would have been a great mentor for Szczesny, as the Brazilian has won just about everything a goalkeeper can in his career.
Luis Suarez to Become the Top Target
For quite a while, it seemed like Gonzalo Higuain was Arsenal's biggest priority in the transfer window. Then came the revelation from Florentino Perez that the Gunners have yet to even make a bid for the player, per Univision via The Telegraph.
Now Goal's Wayne Veysey is reporting that Luis Suarez has instead become the top priority:
"Arsenal are preparing a £35 million offer for Luis Suarez, Goal understands.
"
The Gunners will make a concerted push to sign the Liverpool forward after contacting the Merseyside club last week about his availability.
There were reports on Monday that Arsenal had made a £30m bid for Suarez, and sources have told Goal that the club will pay up to £35m for the Uruguayan.
It is understood that Arsene Wenger has switched his main focus to capturing Suarez as Arsenal struggle to agree a fee with Real Madrid for Gonzalo Higuain.
The news regarding the Higuain pursuit is starting to make more sense if Arsenal are turning all of their attention to Suarez.
He would arguably be the better target. He's a better player than Higuain and is already accustomed to the Premier League.
The biggest problems are that Liverpool might not want to sell Suarez to another Premier League club, and it might take more than £35 million to pry him away from Anfield.
Of course, when you have Suarez on your team, you know you've got a ticking time bomb that can go off at any time. It's surprising that Wenger would want to take that chance.
Arsenal May Finally Have Rid Themselves of Nicklas Bendtner
If Arsenal wanted to look in-house for their striker, they could look to Nicklas Bendtner. Just kidding.
Bendtner has long been a thorn in the side of Gunners supporters as he's failed to live up to his potential. He's a befuddling player, as he has all the talent, but it just isn't coming together for him.
David Kent of the Daily Mail is reporting Eintracht Frankfurt are in for the striker, and talks between the two clubs are at an advanced stage. The German club had a statement on their website:
"On the initiative of the Danish player Nicklas Bendtner and his advisors final talks have been held today on Tuesday 9, 2013 in Frankfurt between the striker and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Sports director Bruno Hubner is in close contact with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, and the final decision regarding Bendtner should be taken in the next two days.
"
If the Gunners can offload Bendtner, it would be a step in the right direction. The 25-year-old's loan to Juventus was a bust; however, he did have some success at Sunderland.
At this point, Bendtner is not going to vastly improve from a one-year loan. It's become clear that the striker has little to no future at the Emirates. Getting a permanent deal for the player is about the only move Arsenal have.
