"One is the loneliest number" was a familiar lyric made popular in a song many years ago. In the Kovalev family, that lyric would sound more like "One is the Luckiest number".

In 1991, Alex Kovalev was the first Russian player to be drafted in the first round, by the New York Rangers.  Years later, he would be the first Russian player to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup.

Last week, Viacheslav Kovalev, (Alex's father) arrived in Montreal, his first trip to Canada. This was the first time in seven years that Alex's dad would watch his son play in the NHL. It seems fitting that this 'proud papa' would be around to witness  another accolade bestowed on his son, the Molson Cup. This award is given to a Habs player who scores the most points based on three star selections and with his stellar performance this season, Kovalev was the hands-down winner.

Recently, Guy Carbonneau gave AK27 another prestigious honor in the form of a letter 'C' , making AK an AC (alternate captain). Carbonneau said that Kovalev has been an inspiration to the entire team and coaching staff, providing the kind of leadership that has guided his team to the playoffs.

After a disappointing performance last season, the 35 year old winger has turned his career around, notching huge numbers, while being a positive role model for many of the younger players. As a child, Kovalev was diagnosed with a weak heart but would overcome that setback through his passion and love for the game of hockey. No one  knew how strong his heart would become, as evidenced by his generosity both on and off the ice. His humanitarian efforts along with his record breaking performance  have made him an even bigger fan favorite this year.

With Captain Saku Koivu watching from the sidelines, it's comforting to know that the team is in good and some claim 'soft hands'. And not one to steal the spotlight, Alex Kovalev won't be happy until his current teammates can see their names engraved on the Stanley Cup, a first he'll be truly proud of.
