Dumb Marketing: Does Daniel to Henrik Equal Goal?
The Vancouver Canucks 2007-08 season is finally over.
Well, actually, they still have a game remaining on Saturday night against the playoff-bound Calgary Flames, but really, it's a meaningless affair for last season's Northwest Division champs.
Vancouver was of course mathematically eliminated on Thursday night following a 2-1 loss on home ice to the Edmonton Oilers, clinching the last two playoff berths for Calgary (which lost earlier to Minnesota) and Nashville (which beat St. Louis in the second game of a home-and-home series).

I won't harp too muchĀ on the Vancouver-Edmonton tilt, because I didn't even see it.
No, I'm not going to rub it in this time to those who support Vancouver. If I were to do that, I should then be heckling fans in Tampa, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, Florida, and all those other cities as well, just to make it fair. Well, no time for that.
But for those of you who had the misfortune of witnessing Thursday's elimination game, the Canucks had tons of power plays (seven, including a brief two-man advantage) andĀ outshot the visitors 38-21 but mostly fired blanks at first star Dwayne Roloson, who lost the goose-egg with only seven minutes remaining.
It was Vancouver's sixth lossāall in regulation, none of those being cheap one-point defeatsān seven games.
Well, the one Achilles' heel that had been plaguing the Canucks all year long was their lack of offensive output.
And fittingly, in the game that saw the Canucks get eliminated, they mustered only a single tally.
Like I said, I won't trash the Canucks too much here, but I do want to mention something about the "marketing" on Team 1040 in Vancouver.
Those living in the Vancouver market, who listen to the station, must be shaking their heads.
If not, well, they should be. Seriously.
The Canucks' marketing on that radio station focuses on the Sedins, Daniel and Henrik, in its promo.
It goes something like, "Daniel...to Henrik... score!Ā Daniel...to Henrik, Daniel... score! Daniel... Henrik...Daniel...score!" repeatedly, with some hip music playing in the background.
Obviously not the play-by-play on the same goal, but multiple ones that have been scored in the past, but still...
It's curious that that would be the commercial featured on the station, given the fact that goaltending is supposed to be the Canucks' top asset, not scoring.
And certainly not the Sedins. It's not like it's "Gretzky to Kurri!" or anything.
Let's take a look:
Daniel Sedin, the Canucks leading scorer this season, has 29 goalsābut just three coming in the last 21 games.
In the same span, Henrik Sedin, known more as a playmaker, has the identical number of goals (to go along with 11 assists).
It just seems a bit outrageous, and goofy, that this particular clip would be used.
You would think that they--whoever is in charge of the marketingāwould put together a more appropriate "highlight" package in the promo (maybe with the youngsters that everyone is so much in love with as well as Roberto Luongo's clutch saves)Ā instead of this nonsense.
At leastāhopefullyāthis annoying clip (not just for non-Canucks fans, but also for their own supporters) won't be played in the upcoming weeks and months because the Canucks are out of the running.
Thank goodness.
