John Daly Unhappy with Rick Reilly
John Daly was interviewed on a sports radio show in Denver earlier this week, and one of the topics discussed was his inclusion in Rick Reilly’s book, Who’s Your Caddy? In the book, Reilly devotes a few paragraphs towards the end of the chapter on Daly, to include some information that Daly thought was off the record. I’ll post the except in question below (in italics):
Daly has to [urinate] like an elephant now, but he won’t let (regular caddy) Mick stop. He wants to get to Hartford. So, to save time, he simply pulls out his [uh ... let's say "driver"] and [urinates] into his now-empty giant Diet Coke cup…
He does a masterful job, no spills, even sealing it with the plastic lid. I think he secretly hopes Mick will mistake it for his Coke later in the trip.
Suddenly, he turns in his chair and he’s laughing and I realize Daly’s got something huge and white and massive in his hand …
You can decide for yourself what was white and massive in his hand. Daly thought that this particular moment was off the record and, according to him, Reilly assured him that it would not be printed. If that’s true, then Reilly broke one of journalism’s major rules, which is that you do not print something that is considered off the record. And let’s face it, no one really wanted to know that about John Daly, anyway.
