Jack Swagger has a lot of momentum going into WrestleMania 29. That momentum will end at WrestleMania.
The Real American came back focused and primed for a possible world title run. Swagger had new direction thanks to joining forces with Zeb Colter. He won the Elimination Chamber, earning his shot at Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania.
Unfortunately, Swagger’s biggest momentum and a mistake arrived almost at the same time.
Controversy arose when Glenn Beck criticized both Swagger and Colter’s beliefs on how America should be run. Colter and Swagger responded by inviting the controversial disc jockey to Raw. Beck declined.
This was huge not just for Swagger but also for the WWE. They received plenty of press while getting Swagger’s new character over. It’s a shame that mistake happened around the same time.
Before Beck made his comments, Swagger was arrested on February 23 in Biloxi, Mississippi for a DUI and possession of marijuana. According to TMZ, authorities stated Swagger was driving while intoxicated under the drug. Local authorities intend to press charges to the fullest and thus if convicted, Swagger would pay a fine and possibly serve a short sentence.
No course of action has been taken by the WWE. Swagger will still face Del Rio for the world title at WrestleMania. However, do you really think the WWE has forgotten about that?
Take a look back at July 2, 2006, where Rob Van Dam was both the WWE and ECW Champion. Ohio state trooper J.N. Baker pulled over Van Dam and Sabu for going 72 mph in a 55 mph zone. The state trooper smelled pot in the car and gave Van Dam a misdemeanor citation for possession. Van Dam then lost both titles the next week and never got close to another title in the company.
It’s disappointing for a talent like Swagger to lose that momentum. It seemed Swagger was ready for a title shot, but this problem outside the ring will come back to haunt him.
Vince McMahon supposedly is not happy with the reaction Swagger gets on TV shows. Swagger and Colter get great reactions at house shows, but the crowd’s enthusiasm during Swagger’s matches dissipates.
Another factor is Del Rio. The WWE wants a top Latino babyface. The Wrestling Observer (via Wrestlezone) reported the WWE made Del Rio a babyface due to Rey Mysterio’s injuries and Sin Cara’s disappointing performances. He is also struggling to get over, but he has a better shot because of the absence of drugs in his system.
Jack Swagger had the right gimmick at the right time. However, his DUI will haunt him and derail his push.
