AJ Allmendinger has proven that he can drive a race car.
He's also proven that in good equipment with a good team surrounding him, he might even win.
Richard Petty Motorsports is going to make sure of that.
Last weekend at Texas it was reported that the RPM team had until August to pick up the option that was on Allmendinger's contract and decide whether or not they wanted to keep him for 2010.
Sources are saying that the company has picked up that option and will keep Allmendinger in the No. 44 car through 2010, not let the curious minds at Joe Gibbs Racing snatch him up.
Allmendinger has also recently gotten new sponsorship for the rest of this season, which allows him to race through the September Richmond race.
His best finish of the year was a third place in the season opening Daytona 500 and then finished in the top ten at Martinsville.
At one point this season he was as high as 15th in points.
"We have shown that we have the ability to run up front in this series," said Allmendinger. "You are going to see our results get progressively better the longer this team stays together."
A mediocre run at Texas has set the team back to 20th but within 104 points of Chase for the Championship contention.
Allmendinger has said that he can't believe the season he's having and that if you would have told him a year ago he would have been in this position, he probably would have laughed at you.
Now, he and the team can laugh all the way to Phoenix, where they will no doubt be in even high spirits now that there future is set.
