If tradition in WWE has taught us anything, Ryback will challenge for the WWE World Heavyweight championship at WrestleMania 29.

Looking at past runner-ups in the Royal Rumble match, you may notice a very interesting pattern. Last year, Chris Jericho was the runner-up and challenged CM Punk for the WWE title. The winner Sheamus chose to challenge for the World Heavyweight title. Unfortunately, only the Rumble winner was victorious at WrestleMania in this particular case.

In 2010, John Cena was the runner-up in the Royal Rumble match and challenged for the WWE title, while the winner, Edge, challenged for the World Heavyweight title. In this case, the runner-up won the title, but the Rumble winner was not victorious.

While it hasn’t happened every single year, being the runner-up in the Rumble match has seemed to come with a consolation prize.

Ryback was this year’s runner-up and he should be fully expected to challenge soon for the WWE World Heavyweight title.

Ryback made his debut last year the week after WrestleMania and has been built to be a future World Champion.

He would have been the perfect Superstar to win the Royal Rumble.

Consider how Sheamus was being built before his Rumble win. He was just turning face and beginning to be built as a powerful top guy. Ryback has accomplished much more than Sheamus due to his experience challenging for the WWE title.

With the WWE title picture crowded with CM Punk, The Rock and John Cena, there just isn’t room for Ryback. However, WWE should continue to push Ryback as he has been impressive and certainly over with the audience. Plus, the World Heavyweight Title picture is much less crowded.

Now that Big Show had his rematch with Del Rio, who will challenge for the title next?

The Elimination Chamber pay-per-view will feature six Superstars fighting for the World Heavyweight Championship. Ryback is one of the Superstars featured on the pay-per-view’s promotional poster, guaranteeing he will be involved in a chamber match.

It was widely expected that Ryback would face the Big Show at WrestleMania 29 for the World Heavyweight title. However, when Del Rio defeated Big Show for the belt, it seemed to change everyone’s plans. It also seemed to signal that WWE was going to push Del Rio instead of Ryback.

In any case, there is no guarantee Del Rio will still be champion come WrestleMania. He will have to survive five Superstars inside a chamber, including Ryback and Big Show who is also featured on the poster.

Ryback may not have won the Royal Rumble despite entering at the coveted number 30 spot and making it to the final two, but he should still be a future World Champion. Most likely World Heavyweight champion.

It is tradition after all.
