WWE Royal Rumble 2013: Why CM Punk vs. The Rock Could Be Match of the Year
At the upcoming Royal Rumble event, the WWE Championship match between champion CM Punk and The Rock could be the match of the year.
How could the first match top all others for 2013 if other matches will follow them in different events? Well, sometimes a match defines generations and eras. This match fits into that category.
CM Punk will carry his WWE title into 2013 with over a yearlong reign. The Rock will get his first WWE title shot in 11 years. Considering the stakes, their wrestling work ethic and the history behind their feud, these two men can create the match of this upcoming year.
Here’s why CM Punk vs. The Rock could be match of the year.
At the 1,000th episode of Monday Night Raw, CM Punk was confronted by The Rock. The People’s Champion revealed he would get a title shot for Punk’s championship.
Punk would respond later in the night.
As the Big Show interfered in Punk’s title match attacking John Cena, The Rock came to his aid. He was about to deliver the People’s Elbow until Punk clotheslined him and then hit the GTS on Rock.
Rock won’t take that lying down. In fact, it’s probably still in his head. He’s been training for this match more than ever.
Punk is just as motivated and training just as hard, despite his recent knee surgery. When these two collide at the rumble, it’s going to be an explosion.
We got a taste of their interactions when Rock confronted Punk at Raw.
It was only a preview of things to come, especially when Rock announced his title shot opportunity. The week after Punk attacked Rock, he began inundating the Rock with countless insults at every opportunity.
Trash talking escalated rampantly on Twitter. Punk interrupted Rock’s “#RockTalk,” where Rock answers fans questions by tweeting a picture of two toys depicting how the rumble would end and used the same hashtag.
When these two mega giants finally get the opportunity to address to each other, there might not be enough microphones to project their outbursts! They are two of the best talkers to ever step in the ring. Expect their promo work to be exceptional and spellbinding.
The Title Reign
Much commotion has been made for Punk’s title reign.
Last month, Paul Heyman spotlighted Punk’s yearlong reign after his victory at Survivor Series. He showed how much Punk’s reign should mean to wrestling fans.
It’s a true accomplishment and could also be a deciding factor during this match.
Punk has beaten everyone there is to thrash on the roster. There’s no one left wrestling full-time that Punk hasn’t faced. It’s almost as if Punk has been picturing The Rock in his head since that fateful confrontation.
Punk has been the WWE champion for 393 days. No one knows who will take the title from him, but who knows what might happen at the Royal Rumble; things change.
The clock is ticking.
First Time in a Long Time
The Rock gets a title shot for the first time since July 2002, where he defeated the Undertaker and Kurt Angle to become the undisputed WWE champion.
His reign would only last a month, as he lost the title to Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. It would be the last time Rock would even be mentioned in the WWE Title picture.
Getting another shot isn’t the only part of memory lane The Rock will revisit. He’ll have to deal with Paul Heyman in his opponent’s corner again. He will be facing and dealing with a champion who’s made 2012 his year.
Can The Rock become the new champion, or will he fall again?
This will definitely be a high-ranking quality match because of this duo’s work ethic.
Rock’s best quality in his matches was selling. He could sell moves like no other in his prime. He made every finisher look devastating, and the way he took the GTS on that Raw showed he’s still got it.
Punk can wrestle any style with any opponent. He had plenty of match-of-the-year candidates this year with John Cena, Dolph Ziggler and Daniel Bryan. Punk can make anyone look great, and he can make The Rock “The Great One” once again.
The crowd’s been invested since this past summer. The wrestling world is salivating and waiting for these wrestling titans to lock up. At the Royal Rumble, Rock and Punk will become the match of 2013.
