How the FBI Exploited Tim Donaghy
John FalcettaJul 24, 2007
Here's a story for a mob movie: The mob gets its hooks in a referee of a major sports league and has him shave points. The ref gets caught by the FBI.
To bolster their case, the Feds leak word that the ref will testify against the gangsters...thus forcing him to testify in order to save his skin from revenge-bent Mafiosos.
Great plan, right?
Except this isn't The Sopranos. This is real life.Ā
Good thing the threats weren't the real deal. Otherwise, the FBI's case would be, well, shot.Ā
I'm suggesting here not only that the Feds planted the story to force Donaghy to testify they may have also may been behind the "threats."
While there's officially no Mafia in the United States,Ā there is organized crime. And mobsters don't make empty threats. They just kill.
My point: Something stinks here.
The FBI agent who leaked the story and the reporter who wrote it should both be charged with reckless endangerment. Thank God nothing happened to Tim Donaghy. And what about the other officials and players he's supposed to name? If the FBI doesn't protect them, they may be in grave danger.
Whether we want to admit it or not, people like Tony Soprano and Tony Montana are for real and they kill the people who cross them.
And in real life, there aren't any sequels.
