Creature Vs. Creature: NASCAR Picks (Food City 500)

Each week, seven our our esteemed B/R NASCAR writers discuss their picks for the upcoming race. Each week, the writer receives the total number of points their selected driver gets.

At the end of the 26-race regular season, writers will receive 10 bonus points for each win they had during the season and the Chase field will be set, just as the Cup stars do it.

The Dirty South was kind to all but one of our writers' drivers. David Phillips' pick of Bobby Labonte brought home an unimpressive 40th place showing.

Fortunately, Phillips had enough of a lead built over sixth- and seventh-place Kelly Crandall and LJ Burgess, to maintain his top five status.

Our top pick of the week came from MJ Buchanan, whose selection of Jeff Gordon came home in second.

The second-place finish was enough to bump MJ to second place in the Creature vs. Creature standings.

S.M. Napier again proved he knows what he's doing when it comes to picks, as his selection of Carl Edwards finished third—and almost pulled off the win.

This week can best be described as: "Survival of the Fittest."

Who knows who is going to win at Bristol, but here are our panel's picks:

Ben Bomberger

This week's pick: Brian Vickers—I know, it's going out on a limb to pick Vickers at a track where he hasn't fared so well, but I'm doing it.

Am I worried about his past stats? Sure I am! But I think this is going to be the time that Vickers pulls it out and wins at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Besides, it's anybody's race...right?

Last week's pick: Jimmie Johnson (finished ninth).

This week's pick: Jeff Gordon—I sound like a broken record, but am going to stick with this one until Ella Sofia appears with him in Victory Lane. My pick is Gordon to win at Bristol.

Last week's pick: Jeff Gordon (finished second).

This week's pick: Carl Edwards—I'm in Carl Edwards' seat this week...with Jeffro Gordon and the notorious Busch brothers bothering the top spot all day.

Last week's pick: Kyle Busch (finished 18th).

This week's pick: Jeff Gordon—I don't think there is anyone better at that race track. and with the roll he has been on so far in 2009, Bristol could be the track where he scores his first win of the year, as well as ending his winless streak.

Gordon has five wins in 32 races, 13 top fives, 19 top-10s, five poles, and his average finishing position is 11.5. And oh, by the way, he's led 2,438 laps.

That happens to be the most for any active driver in the Series right now. The guy flat out knows how to get around that racetrack.

Last week's pick: Dale Earnhardt Jr. (finished 11th).

This week's pick: Jeff Gordon—Well, I'm going with Gordon this week. He is a master at getting around Bristol, and all together has five wins. I look for Gordon to get a solid top-five finish, if not a win.

I've thought about picking him a couple of times the last couple weeks, and ended up regretting not doing so. So Gordon, bring home a win! (dark horse: Jeff Burton)

Last week's pick: Dale Earnhardt Jr. (finished 11th).

This week's pick: Kevin "Happy" Harvick—Well this week, it's Thunder Valley, survival of the fittest, and I'm going to be picking "Happy" Harvick.

Last year in the spring race, he was second in a 1-2-3 RCR finish, he could win his first pole and very hungry for a win.

He just seems to run well at Bristol. In 16 races, he has one win, nine top-fives, 11 top-10's, led 390 laps, and a 9.6 average finishing position.

Last week's pick: Carl Edwards (finished third).

Last week's pick: Bobby Labonte (finished 40th).
