Jaguars' Rebuild Lagging Behind the Colts and Other AFC South Must-Reads

Don't make promises you can't keep, Shad.

For four years the Jaguars have been rebuilding. The Indianapolis Colts only just started this past offseason.

So why are the Jaguars 1-6 and the Colts 5-3?

Today's article of the day comes from Mark Long of the Associated Press, who points out this disparity.

Ultimately, the answer comes down to an under-performing roster put together by embattled general manager Gene Smith.

Smith's 2012 draft has been a disaster early on. Justin Blackmon isn't producing. Andre Branch hasn't made an impact. And we haven't mentioned the fact that he drafted a punter in round three yet.

The Colts seem to have hit home runs with most of their early picks.

The 2012 draft isn't a lone example. So much of Smith's tenure has been about controversial and unproductive draft-day decisions.

At this point, is there any reason to keep Smith on in Jacksonville?

The question seems to be at the heart of the long talk that Shad Khan had with the media yesterday (transcribed here by Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union).

In his chat, Gene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union said that Khan made it clear that he was going to be patient and unemotional about any impending changes.

That's the right course of action for now, but come January 1, Khan will have to move on from the Smith regime.
