Manchester United has been linked with a move for Lille defender Lucas Digne over the January transfer window, as the Red Devils seek to add further squad depth for the year ahead.

The Premier League giants are believed to be in a battle with fellow rivals Chelsea for the starlet's signature and will battle it out over the January transfer window for his services—a move that the youngster has welcomed.

Per Click Manchester:

Lille full-back Lucas Digne has welcomed interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.

“I am naturally very pleased to have been named in the French under-21 squad and welcome the news that my selection is followed in Britain by Manchester United and Chelsea,” Digne is quoted by Sport24.

The news comes as an interesting development for the Red Devils, who have already been linked with a plethora of speculation about the departure of Nemanja Vidic from the club over the January transfer window—as they did with Patrice Evra and over the summer transfer window.

Digne is an exciting young talent, who is technically sound and more than competent of succeeding in the English Premier League, though it is obviously not yet known just how he will fare until he actually does arrive in the English competition.

Despite only being 19 years old, Digne already has experience in the UEFA Champions League and is currently valued at around £4 million, according to Transfermarkt.

Should the Red Devils pursue him, he would be a solid and inexpensive addition into the defense, though he is not to be thought of as the long-term replacement for Vidic or Rio Ferdinand any time in the near future.

Players like Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling would be ahead of him—and rightly so—though as mentioned, he would no doubt receive plenty of playing time throughout the various domestic and European competitions.

And at 19 years old, the potential upside could be huge for the Red Devils, as well as for Lucas Digne himself.
