Ohio State Football Recruiting: Should Buckeyes Offer 4-Star 2014 QB Kyle Allen?
4-Star 2014 quarterback Kyle Allen is planning on visiting the Ohio State Buckeyes as part of a trio of college visits this fall, but even though the quarterback is interested in them, should OSU be interested in him?
Ohio State has not yet made an offer to Allen, but according to Justin Hopkins of 247Sports he is on their radar:
"His final trip will be to Ohio State on Oct. 6. The Buckeyes have not offered but have indicated he is one of the top options on their board.
"
Obviously this visit may be a defining moment in the thought processes of both parties involved, but let's examine this from the Buckeyes' perspective.
Should they really make an offer to this kid?
I'm leaning towards no.
To be very clear, it has nothing to do with Allen's skills. He's 6'1'', 185 pounds and is a strong pocket passer. I like his presence as a quarterback and I really like his arm, especially his accuracy. He's going to be a good college quarterback, but I don't see him being the Buckeyes' guy.
Frankly, they have their guy in 2013 quarterback commit J.T. Barrett.
Barrett is a bit bigger than Allen at 6'1'', 209 pounds, and he possesses a completely different skill set. He still has the ability to throw the ball at an elite level, but where he separates himself is with his feet.
He has the running ability, speed and elusiveness of a 4-star running back, and that added dimension makes him a much more dangerous option for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes. Barrett actually looks like he could be a better passer than sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller, and he may be able to put some pressure on him for the gig once he gets some experience in the program under his belt.
Some would say that recruiting a great quarterback every year is a good idea, but I have to disagree, especially in this instance. The Buckeyes already have a young quarterback in Miller, and as I said, Barrett looks like he has what it takes to be the real deal.
Kyle Allen will be a good college quarterback, but the Buckeyes would be better suited using that offer on a different position, as it looks like they're going to be set at quarterback for a few years to come.
I wouldn't make an offer if I was Ohio State.
