Sunderland want to speak to Fulham over Liverpool target Clint Dempsey and are keen on Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha and Dnipro full back Ivan Strinic.
Dempsey has been linked with a move to Anfield all summer, but may be persuaded to travel to the Northeast instead.
Scoring goals wasn't easy for Liverpool last season, and if they cannot find the back of the net against clubs like West Brom this year, some reinforcements will need to be brought in.
Which club should Dempsey move to?
The Reds' strong defense saved their poor attacking play last year, and it's unlikely that will happen again since many of the league's teams are stronger this season.
Dempsey can be the man to link the midfield and the strikers, or take on a scoring role himself. He's the ideal player for manager Brendan Rodgers' attacking style of football.
If Liverpool don't complete a transfer for Dempsey, and he instead goes to a team like Sunderland that the Reds are going to be fighting with for position in the top 10 of the table, it will be a huge setback for the Anfield club.
If Rodgers' style is going to help Liverpool make improvements this season, he needs more creative players in the squad.
The season opener proved that Liverpool still need one more attacking player to compete with the best clubs in England.
Rodgers must move quickly to ensure he signs the American star before another club have the opportunity to prevent Dempsey from making a move to Anfield.
