Michael Phelps Medal Count: Predicting Olympic Great's London Totals

Scott CarasikJun 7, 2018

Michael Phelps has said this will be his final Olympic Games. While this won't be like his eight-gold-medal performance in Beijing or his six-gold-medal performance in Athens, he will still have a great Olympics in its own right.

Phelps has two events left. The first is the 100-meter butterfly that he has already qualified for. Then, he is also on the United States 4x100-meter medley relay team that is qualifying for the medal race on August 3, and, if they get into the final, racing on August 4.

This is arguably Phelps' best event that he races in. He's the world-record holder, and while he still has the same kind of speed that he had when he set the record, he is going against a crowd that has caught up to him.

Of that crowd, Chad le Clos of South Africa is looking like the man who will dethrone Phelps for the 100-meter butterfly gold. Phelps should still settle into his third silver medal of the Games, bringing his total to 21.

Projection: Silver

4x100-Meter Medley Relay

Michael Phelps will have to get some help from his amazing teammates as he takes the butterfly leg. Nathan Adrian is going to have to contribute in the freestyle leg. Matt Grevers will take the backstroke leg and then Brendan Hansen will have to close out in the breaststroke.

The US team has the best mix of talent throughout the different strokes. Phelps, Grevers, Hansen and Adrian will have not just a gold-medal possibility, but a world-record possibility, and will bring Phelps' total amount of medals to 22.

Prediction: Gold

Final Medal Haul for His Career

Gold: 17 (six in Athens 2004, eight in Beijing 2008, three in London 2012)

Silver: Three (three in London 2012)

Bronze: Two (two in Athens 2004)

Total: 22 (eight in Athens 2004, eight in Beijing 2006, six in London 2012)

Phelps will be the best medalist of all time for a while. As part of his legacy are 17 gold medals, an unprecedented dominance in any sport. The three silvers and two bronze medals will just be icing on the already sweet-tasting cake for the unflappable Phelps, as he cements his legacy as the greatest Olympian of all time.
