Fab Five Gymnastics: Will USA's Favorite Team Bring Home the Gold?

Alex HallJun 4, 2018

If you're dubbed with the word "fab" to describe your group, then you better deliver, come crunch time.

The women's gymnastics team have been given Beatle-like treatment during these London Games, and they'll be just as successful as the Liverpool rockers when it comes time for the team final.

Playing the role of Beatles' rock rival The Rolling Stones in this drawn-out analogy will be the Russian team, who boasts two gymnastic phenoms in Aliya Mustafina and Viktoria Komova.

The latter of the two gymnasts is an accomplished all-around participant, winning silver in the 2011 World Championships and gold in the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Mustafina on the other hand, will be looking to cap her recovery from an ACL tear in 2011 with an Olympic gold medal after the injury sidelined her much of the previous year. If the Russians are to win their first gold in team competition since the 1988 Summer Games, this dynamic duo must be in top form.

That being said, Mustafina and Komova's squad is still less favored to win than the United States, who have brought their strongest team since the 1996 team to London. Jordyn Wieber's start to the Summer Games wasn't as expected, but teammates Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas look to be near-unstoppable when analyzing their individual all-around and team qualifying performances.

Team USA took gold in the team event back at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo thanks to the athleticism of Douglas, Raisman, Wieber and McKayla Maroney who will all represent their country in this same event in London. This is a team that has been to the top of the mountain together in the past, even if most of them lack prior Olympic experience.

Experience didn't seem to matter much during the qualifying round when the U.S. posted the best time in the field with a score of 181.863. Of course, Russia would post the second-best time with 180.429 which shows that these two teams are in all likelihood going to take home two of the three medals that will be given out.

Wieber and company have proven they can beat the Russians in the past, and they'll use that confidence mixed with their impressive talent to create a gold medal performance in the final.
