Chelsea Transfer News: Is Cesar Azpilicueta on His Way to Stamford Bridge?
Chelsea transfer target Cesar Azpilicueta could well be on his way to Stamford Bridge over the summer transfer window after Marseille confirmed that the right-back could leave the club.
Believed to only cost around £7 million, Azpilicueta is viewed as a replacement at right-back for Branislav Ivanovic, who is most likely to be used in the middle of defense for the Blues more this season as opposed to on the right-hand side of the pitch, according to Goal.com.
The 22-year-old is currently in London for the 2012 Olympic Games, where he's playing for Spain. According to Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo, he could be on his way out of the French club over the summer transfer window.
"Everybody has to sell before buying. In effect, it could either be [Stephane] M'Bia and Azpi [Cesar Azpilicueta]. But for now, nothing has changed..."
The defender would be the Blues' fourth big signing of the summer after already securing the likes of Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and Oscar for the upcoming English Premier League season.
Should they sign the 22-year-old, Ivanovic would be able to move into the middle of defense as he desires, and the Blues would pick a more-than-able replacement at right-back.
Jose Bosingwa's departure from Stamford Bridge has left the Blues needing to add depth to their defense, and the acquisition of Cesar Azpilicueta—for the rumored price—would be a great little deal to boost their depth once again.
