To the delight of Colts’ fans, and to the surprise of almost everyone, Reggie Wayne re-signed with the Colts during the offseason. The signing will make Wayne, in his words, a “Colt For Life.” His contract, which runs through 2014, will keep Wayne with the Colts for his entire 14-year career.
The question that comes to mind is: Will Reggie Wayne go down as the greatest Indianapolis Colts wide receiver of all time?
This debate includes just two names: Wayne and Marvin Harrison. Harrison is currently the owner of all the Indianapolis Colts' receiving records.
Here's a look at their career numbers.
Marvin Harrison: 13 Years, 1,102 Receptions, 14,580 Yards, 128 Touchdowns
Reggie Wayne: 11 Years, 862 Receptions, 11,708 Yards, 73 Touchdowns
Wayne trails Harrison by 240 receptions, 2,872 yards and 55 touchdowns. He has a chance to match the receptions and maybe the yards, but he's got no shot at Harrison's 128 touchdowns, which ranks fifth all time, by the way.
Bear in mind that those are regular season numbers.
Here's a look at Wayne and Harrison's career postseason numbers.
Marvin Harrison: 16 Games, 65 Receptions, 883 Yards, 2 Touchdowns
Who will go down as the greatest Indianapolis Colts WR ever?
Reggie Wayne: 17 Games, 83 Receptions, 1,128 Yards, 9 Touchdowns, 1 Two-Point Conversion
Harrison has the better regular-season numbers. Wayne has the better postseason numbers.
Wayne has been selected to five Pro Bowls and was a first team All-Pro in 2010. Harrison was selected to eight Pro Bowls and was a first team All-Pro three times.
Overall, the career stats of Wayne and Harrison will be pretty close, with the edge to Harrison. The biggest difference between the two would be their personalities. On the field, Harrison made impossible catches seem routine. Off the field, he was extremely quiet and kept to himself. Wayne has always been much more outspoken in public and in the locker room; he’s much more media and fan friendly.
Just look at the Colts final home game last season against the Texans. Wayne caught the game-winning touchdown. Fans were on their feet chanting, “Reggie! Reggie!” After the game Wayne said, “I've been here 11 years. I don't see myself anywhere else. I'm a Hoosier, man."
So, while Marvin Harrison may be the greatest Indianapolis Colts receiver of all time, Reggie Wayne will likely go down as the most beloved Colts receiver of all time.
