Chelsea Transfer News: Complete Profile of Newest Signing, Oscar
His full name is Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Junior, but you probably just know him as Oscar.
Today, the attacking midfielder agreed to a €25 million deal to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
But what is there to know about this 20-year-old who Chelsea felt warranted such money? Here is a brief profile of the newest and youngest member of the Blues.
Early Career
Oscar was born in Americana, a city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo.
In 2004, at the age of 13, he joined local club São Paulo FC and their youth squad.
He finally made his debut with the club in 2008 and helped them win their third Serie A title in as many years.
Turmoil and Conflict
The next season, Oscar made 13 appearances for São Paulo.
However, the club failed to win the title for the first time in four years and refused to pay him the money he was due.
As a result, Oscar rescinded his contract and, after a court battle, was able to get a move to Internacional for a €6 million compensation payment.
International Success
Playing with the likes of fellow Brazilian wunderkind Leandro Damiao, Oscar experienced great success at Inter.
He helped his club to two consecutive Campeonato Gaucho titles in 2011 and 2012 and the Recopa Sudamerica title in 2011.
His 13 goals and 10 assists through 44 appearances in 2011 were fantastic, but his brief run with Inter in 2012 was even more so: six goals and 10 assists in just 20 games.
Brazilian National Team and the Hat Trick
By far the most impressive arena Oscar has performed in is on the international level.
In 2011, he and his Brazilian compatriots led their nation to the FIFA U-20 World Cup title.
While that feat is impressive in and of itself, the way Oscar helped his team there is even more so.
After not scoring a goal through his side's first six matches, Oscar erupted with a hat trick in the final against Portugal. His were the only three goals for Brazil, and each was important as they won 3-2.
It was only the second hat trick in any World Cup final after Geoff Hurst's for England in 1966.
Since then, Oscar has earned six caps with Brazil's senior national team.
Last month, he scored his first international goal against Argentina.
Playing Style
Oscar is an extremely versatile midfielder and is able to play in many positions across the pitch.
His hallmark is his great movement and passing, yet he is able to play as a second striker and finish more than capably with either foot.
The only worrying sign, though, is his lack of physicality. In the past, opponents have been somewhat successful in muscling him out of the match.
Furthermore, he has had a bit of trouble keeping his level of play at a consistently-high level through the whole 90 minutes.
Conclusion
The signing looks to be a great one for Chelsea.
In the short term, they have prevented their in-city rivals from getting their desired target.
For the long term, they have a player who has consistently gotten better and better and should be a great asset to the club.
And even if worse comes to worst and Chelsea find him to be a bust, the fact that he is a Brazilian and has been getting good time with the national team should insure that they at worst make a small loss on their deal.
This transfer looks like a winner.
