Arsenal Transfer News: Juventus Reportedly Favorites to Land Robin Van Persie
Arsenal captain and star striker Robin van Persie has sensationally declared he won't re-sign with the club when his contract expires next season, so where is the Dutch international likely to end up?
Some think Paris St. Germain; others think Manchester City or United—but it appears that Italian club Juventus are the front-runners to land the Gunners star, with reports emerging that they are growing in their confidence to sign the want-away player.
John Cross of Mirror Football highlights Juventus' interest in van Persie, stating that:
Juventus want a stellar signing to boost their standing in Europe and had one rock-bottom bid knocked back [for van Persie], but will come back with more and more and are ready to pay him £180,000 a week. The club have already made significant inroads... courting him and his representatives for months.
English Premier League champions Manchester City were strongly linked to the striker throughout the transfer window before any news regarding van Persie was announced, but it is believed that the Italian club are a more likely landing destination than the Etihad.
City are already blessed with a strong trio of strikers including Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero—both of whom were superb late in the season for the Citizens—as well as Mario Balotelli, who seemingly refound his form with a strong showing at Euro 2012 for Italy.
Van Persie might feel threatened by the competition at the club—meaning that a move to a club where he could be the go-to striker would better suit his needs.
The Dutch international is also believed to feel differently about remaining in the English Premier League, with sources close to the striker reportedly stating that:
"The [English] Premier League is not the be all and end all, like it might be for an English player. Van Persie is Dutch, has a different mindset and other big players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and have had good careers in Italy."
Arsenal reportedly dismissed discussion that they would be selling van Persie to Juventus earlier in the week, but with the striker stating his intentions to leave the Emirates next season, the club may change their tune on the matter.
And if that's the case, Arsene Wenger might finally have to cough up that chocolate bar.
Do you think Robin van Persie will end up at Juventus?
