B/R Official MMA Rankings for July: The Top 10 Flyweights in MMA

1 of 11

As the flyweight division begins to take shape under the UFC banner, former bantamweight contenders Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson have already separated themselves as the top 125-pound fighters in the world.

Later this year, the two fighters will square off in a bout to become the UFC's first ever flyweight champion. Meanwhile, the UFC will look to acquire new flyweight talent that will be capable of challenging the winner of the bout between Benavidez and Johnson in the near future.

With the semifinals of the UFC's 125-pound tournament finally in the books, let's take a look at how the 10 best flyweights in the world stack up.

These rankings are the combined efforts of some of Bleacher Report MMA's best writers, as we continue to try and provide you with the best content on the web.

10. Louis Gaudinot

2 of 11

    Promotion: UFC

    Record: 6-2

Most Recent Fight: Won against John Lineker at UFC on Fox 3

    Next Fight: TBD

    Previous Ranking: 10

After losing at bantamweight in his UFC debut, Louis Gaudinot picked up a huge win at his more natural weight. Now, with the 125-pound division still forming, Gaudinot will have a chance to become a dark horse in the race for a flyweight title shot.

Gaudinot's next fight is still undetermined, but the fact that he is one of the division's more well-known competitors—due to his appearance on The Ultimate Fighter—should set the green-haired flyweight up for a significant matchup.

9. Ulysses Gomez

3 of 11

    Promotion: Tachi Palace Fights

    Record: 9-2

Most Recent Fight: Won against Cody Gibson at TPF 11

    Next Fight: TBD

    Previous Ranking: 9

Ulysses Gomez has won seven of his past eight fights and is speculated by many to be one of the UFC's top targets to add depth to its flyweight division. During his current run of success, Gomez has only lost against former Tachi Palace Fights champion Darrell Montague.

8. Mamoru Yamaguchi

4 of 11

    Promotion: Tachi Palace Fights

    Record: 26-6-3

Most Recent Fight: Lost against Jussier da Silva at TPF 10

    Next Fight: TBD

    Previous Ranking: 8

After winning six straight fights, Mamoru Yamaguchi suffered a loss against Jussier da Silva in his most recent fight. Since then, Yamaguchi has gone nearly one year without competing. Without a fight in the near future, Yamaguchi could lose his spot in the top 10, as several fighters continue making the drop from bantamweight to flyweight.

7. John Dodson

5 of 11

    Promotion: UFC

    Record: 13-5

Most Recent Fight: Won against Tim Elliott at UFC on Fox 3

    Next Fight: TBD

    Previous Ranking: 7

After winning The Ultimate Fighter as a bantamweight, John Dodson immediately returned to the flyweight division, where he made a bid to become one of the division's top contenders by defeating Tim Elliott.

As a former winner of The Ultimate Fighter, Dodson will probably be quickly pushed toward a title shot, though he is nearly deserving of one already without the fame he gained through the reality series.

6. Darrell Montague

6 of 11

    Promotion: Tachi Palace Fights

    Record: 11-2

Most Recent Fight: Won against Taylor McCorriston at TPF 13

    Next Fight: TBD

    Previous Ranking: 6

In his past nine bouts, former Tachi Palace Fights champion Darrell Montague has only lost against elite UFC flyweight Ian McCall. As the UFC looks to grow its 125-pound division, fans can be sure the organization will be looking to get its hands on Montague as soon as possible.

5. Yasuhiro Urushitani

7 of 11

    Promotion: UFC

    Record: 19-5-6

Most Recent Fight: Lost against Joseph Benavidez at UFC on FX 2

    Next Fight: TBD

    Previous Ranking: 5

Former Shooto champion Yasuhiro Urushitani didn't make a great first impression on UFC fans in his Octagon debut, as he was knocked out by Joseph Benavidez. However, the 35-year-old Urushitani remains an elite 125-pound fighter and should be a significant player in the division until his career comes to an end.

4. Jussier da Silva

8 of 11

    Promotion: Shooto

    Record: 13-1

Most Recent Fight: Won against Martin Coria at Coliseu Extreme Fight

    Next Fight: TBD

    Previous Ranking: 4

Jussier da Silva's 14-fight career has only been blemished by a decision loss against Ian McCall in February 2011. Currently a Shooto champion, Da Silva is undoubtedly the top non-UFC flyweight out there. Hopefully, the UFC will be able to secure a deal with Da Silva in the near future, so he can return to competing against top competition.

3. Ian McCall

9 of 11

    Promotion: UFC

    Record: 11-3-1

Most Recent Fight: Lost against Demetrious Johnson at UFC on FX 3

    Next Fight: TBD

    Previous Ranking: 2

With his recent loss against Demetrious Johnson, Ian McCall missed out on a chance to compete in a UFC title fight, but there is no question he will remain in the mix for a shot at the belt for several years to come.

Not only is McCall a fan-favorite, but he proved in two close fights with a former top bantamweight contender that he is one of the best in the world at 125 pounds.

2. Demetrious Johnson

10 of 11

    Promotion: UFC

    Record: 15-2-1

Most Recent Fight: Won against Ian McCall at UFC on FX 3

Next Fight: Joseph Benavidez at TBD

    Previous Ranking: 3

It took six rounds, but Demetrious Johnson eventually picked up a win over Ian McCall that would send him into the UFC's first ever flyweight title fight. Many projected Johnson as one of the best potential flyweights if Zuffa were to ever adopt a 125-pound division.

By beating McCall, Johnson proved a lot of people right and is one victory away from wearing a UFC title around his waist.

1. Joseph Benavidez

11 of 11

    Promotion: UFC

    Record: 16-2

Most Recent Fight: Won against Yasuhiro Urushitani at UFC on FX 2

Next Fight: Demetrious Johnson at TBD

    Previous Ranking: 1

Joseph Benavidez was favored to beat Yasuhiro Urushitani in the semifinals of the UFC's flyweight tournament, but few expected the former bantamweight title contender to dispose of Urushitani with such ease. However, with his knockout of the former Shooto champion in March, Benavidez has emerged as the leading candidate to become the UFC's first ever 125-pound champion.
